Hi folks

Some new toys from IBC that you might like :001_tt1:

AJA Ki Pro Mini (looks very interesting)

Vegas Pro 10 - FCP get's left behind once again!

Sony PMW-500 - XDCAM HD goes solid state!

Canon XF 300E & 305E - not new cameras BUT BBC HD announces that they will accept them for HD delivery making them the cheapest HD option ahead of Scarlet's release of course :smile5:

More to follow.

Best wishes

Scott

Apple are not attending, busy developing Final Cut Studio 4 presumably?

ATI FirePro V9800 launched at IBC

With six Mini DisplayPort outputs, the FirePro V9800 offers a desktop resolution of up to 5,760 x 2,160. There's 4GB of GDDR5 memory: the largest shipping frame buffer available from AMD to help creatives work with the most complex scenes. This is a BEAST of a card!

As AJA's site is down, here's a link for details on their new Ki Pro Mini.

Adobe has announced the BBC is now implementing an additional 2,000 seats of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 software as the primary tool for desktop non-linear editing.

Adobe software is the non-linear editor solution of choice for the BBC’s Creative Desktop Initiative, through which the corporation is reportedly improving efficiency, creating a digital, tapeless environment and reducing costs. Previously FCP was used by the BBC.

What is Apple thinking? I really do NOT understand what they are doing with Pro Apps. The best thing they could do is to sell them to a third party who will put some effort into developing them.

I really think Apple needs to do something pretty soon here. Everyone I speak with who runs FCP says that this is their last chance, if they don't get up to speed with FCS that they are switching to AVID/ADOBE. I'm glad I gave it up awhile ago...we'll just have to wait and see.

ki pro mini looks awesome, if they could squeeze out pro ress 4x4 out of it that would be great, but they probably won't considering it will cut into the big brother's line of business. Will still be a great solution on the prosumer end of cameras, or instant high resolution offline direct to edit method. Competes great with the nanoflash, 3d version next and it's gonna be even more awesome.

as for FCP, it's painful but I can't abandon my FCS workflow, apple pro apps are too integrated with what I do on a lot of projects. They will be screwing a lot of people if they don't come out with something soon. A lot of people and post production facilities don't just abandon an NLE they've done years of projects with just like that. It's a long painful process, whether it's Avid, FCP, or anything else.

We've used Final Cut Pro for years now and I would HATE to abandon it but Apple's silence over FCP's future is frankly insulting.

When I think of the hundreds of hours of needless rendering we have to endure because Apple's software does not make efficient use of their hardware it makes me extremely angry.

IBC 2010 will potentially be a nail in FCP's coffin as visitors witness Media Composer 5, Premier Pro CS5, Vegas 10 and others doing things that Apple simply cannot currently compete with.

The fact that the BBC is buying 2000 seats of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 speaks loudly indeed.

Changing a facility's core technology is a PITA. AVID counted on that while they coasted through the early 2000s. Then the tipping point came and FCP was ubiquitous. It seems like the cycle is repeating with FCP. Both MC5 and CS5 are offering the most compelling value propositions from AVID and Adobe in years and unless Apple/FCP moves soon I agree that FCP and the expensive dongle (Mac hardware) will disappear from a lot of edit bays. ProRes is very popular but that finger in the dike will only hold for so long... Just my 2¢

Cheers - #19

I agree...

ProRes is based on DNxHD made by Ikegami...

People won't stay with Apple and FCP because of ProRes. So Apple should not bind their customer based only on a popular codec.

Pat.

especially since avid can work with native pro res/quicktime now. as does premiere. I wouldn't mind switching back to Avid, but the nail in the coffin for me is their expensive I/O solution. I already invested in a bm/hdp2/dreamcolor solution for CC and HD reference, and that setup won't work on Avid, they are still too stringent on their hardware, mxo mini as your only alternative still isn't much of an option.

only other solution is premiere, but it's still missing some key feature sets that I love about FCP, and I use all the time. I've done a handful of smaller projects with Premiere, and it crashed 4 times on me in 3 days. I wasn't doing anything ridiculous too, and comparing to working in fcp without a single crash or closing down for a week... Premiere still has a touch more to work on. needing more cameras in their multicam and fixing their endless audio rendering is another.

Ki Pro Mini = A+

Seems like the roadmap of Sony and Panasonic consists of a new competition between themselves.

Amongst many products the competition criteria are:
- aesthetically challenged;
- smallest screen available;
- highest compression;
&
- most b.s. in a press release

Except in the "highest compression" category where seems to be a draw, so far Panasonic seems to be in the lead.

Excerpt of the corporate meeting between division executives:

"Okay, we need to design consumer cameras nicely so a lot of people are drawn to them visually. Younger people or soccer mums won't choose an ugly device from the store shelf. We can put pinhead sized sensor in those as long as they look nice. In pro segment we need to distinguish the design from consumer products and focus on specs, like 24 Mbs h.264, or Mpeg 2, making them more "pro like" and less visually appealing because professionals prioritize picture quality over design, and we can't have both because professionals will misinterpret them as not being professional."

KiPro...nice stuff Aja. Is the lack of FCP development in the bleek future of FCP a rumor and speculation or did I miss something. I know apple is becoming a phone company but would like to hear some facts from anyone in the know. cheers.

There are no facts to share, as those in the know are not able to share.
