I am very surprised because there is no news of the Scarlet.
Have they left the project? :embarassed:

It seems.

I used to visit this forum a year ago.
They announced the Scarlet and I was very excited because it was exactly the camera I wanted to buy.
I put all my projects on hold...
First they said that it will be available in spring 2009.
Then they said it will be available in summer. Then they pushed the date to autumn.....
Now it's autumn and there is no Scarlet to buy....
I eventually purchased a Panasonic camera and I will never buy from Red because they tricked me...

No, they pushed projected release dates to later times.

Remember RED's motto:

Specifications, prices and delivery dates are subject to change. Count on it.
We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone with a bad attitude.

I will be in that position very soon. I'll wait until November for the "look-see". If REd does not have a price, what comes with the complete kit on the 2/3" fix, what the cost of all the add-on's, and a date of release, I'm going with a different camera manufacturer.

Remember RED's motto:

They can throw all the motto's out there as they want. The reality is, we need to know something soon and not keep us hanging.

bad attitude! none here.

I gotta LOL at this.

You know, it's not really a big deal for a Canon, Nikon, JVC, whoever, to add a few more megapixels to their sensor and make minor improvements, less noise, etc.

But for a camera company to do something that has never been done before, that is leap years beyond other offerings on the market and you are threatening with taking your business elsewhere because they are trying to smash conventional limitations and deliver an entirely never-before-seen product. The delays are completely reasonable. Your sense of entitlement, however, is not.

One should never put projects on hold because of a camera that has yet to be released. For one thing, as great as the Scarlet's specs are, what if the camera disappointed you in some way when it is released? You will have wasted a lot of time waiting around. Do I think Scarlet will be great and worth the wait? Sure, because I've used R1 a lot and I know what Red is capable of. But anyone who put projects on hold waiting for R1 knows, the development cycle can change in an instant, and the only reason we know about it is because Red has allowed us in on the process. It's a different beast than other companies approach.

If you have projects that need to get done now, rent a R1, a 5D, a Varicam, etc. Get the work done, and you'll be way ahead of the game when Scarlet arrives. You may also make some additional money that can go towards paying for it and additional accessories.

If you need to own a camera, assess everything that is available in your price range, test them out, buy the best one you can afford and then sell it when Scarlet hits the market.

I don't think Red is obligated to deliver a camera that is not ready. If my suspicions are correct, they are doing everything in their power to make sure this thing rocks right out of the box. They want it stable and they want it to have all of the features that they themselves would want to have as a filmmaker at this given moment in time. I think in the end, that's what you'll want to. Remember, customer #1 is Jim Jannard. It's ready when he says it's ready.

And believe me, i I do relate to your frustration. i waited for my R1 for many months. But, in the end it was well worth it. So, if you can have patience. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Scarlet fever: Good bet!

I don't think it's unreasonable to know what comes with the complete kit at this stage. Or even a good ball park for what we will have to spend for it. I can wait a little longer for the camera. I just want to know if it's worth waiting for.

Nothing else to add!

THREAD CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!

:banghead:

would you guys relax a bit and stop slamming on each other... the non-newbs of you should know better.

and, no one tricked you.

and, they said they were only bringing epic to ibc... most of the news till now has been on scarlet. The fact that they are showing a finished epic proto with all working parts (less ASIC) is probably good news for scarlet. Only difference is the brains. Those modules are the same modules that will be available to you with scarlet.

Steve: maybe the Redusers shouldn't be so hard on him. Many businesses (most?) have multiple criteria for purchase decisions and timing. Budget cycles, cash flow, tax implications, etc.

Maybe people anticipate projects even farther down the road but would like to spend time learning/getting comfortable well in advance (and maybe make some money shooting other projects or renting it to others) but doesn't want to do it with an interim camera. Maybe the anticipated interim work or rentals are fairly low profit so the cost/benefit doesn't work as well if they have to rent or take a 30% loss on reselling the interim camera.

It is reasonable that RED may not be able to give him the information he needs when he needs it, BUT it isn't unreasonable for him to ask. It's great that a lot of us are exceedingly patient, but again it isn't unreasonable for others to be less so. Or to feel (not me) that since RED never seems to get close to the projections that they might be being teased rather than given a realistic schedule.

I would recommend that no one put all their business eggs in the basket of any unreleased camera. That's just not smart business planning.

Even if knew you would get it on a specific date, there are still a ton of variables that you would have to deal with once receiving a new piece of equipment, and generally it's not a great idea to use something brand new, untested, unknown on a professional (important) gig until you are well aware of how it works, any limitations, potential issues to look out for, workarounds that may be necessary for you, etc.

Saying that you are never going to purchase from a company who told you about a camera 2 years in advance of it's anticipated release date, with all the usual disclaimers and have kept us largely in the loop (at least in terms of where they are in terms of hitting their dates) is a bit over the top, I would agree. But, to each his own.

Anyone else, you will find out a few months in advance at most, and then if it is a popular piece of equipment, unless you are one of the first batch, are likely to wait on backorder for a period of time without any FIRM knowledge of when it will be available to you. And, again... you still have a lot of other hurdles before you take a brand spanking new to the market (and your hands) piece of equipment on an important job.

Later,
Jason

You can run but you can't hide:smilewinkgrin:

For clarity, my retort was directed predominantly at the guy who said Red tricked him :S
