  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IB/E lenses for RED?

We've seen some of these lenses in development. Very nice stuff. The 14mm prototype looks great. We should be seeing some of these at NAB.

IB/E is one of a number of manufacturers planning new PL mount lenses. Most have not officially announced anything yet.
 
This is great, a set of primes will be my next large purchase... I'm very interested. Mitch, do you think these will be price competitive with Red's lenses ?


Here's a list of current, future and rumored PL mount 35mm format prime lens makers, I'm not including lenses that are not intended for sale: Panavison and Dalsa :

Arri / Zeiss, Germany: Master Primes / Ultra Primes / *rumored set of lower cost primes "Super Speed Rudux"
Cooke UK: S4's
Red USA: *announced set of primes
Optica Elite Russia: S35 Primes, anamorphics, "digital" 35mm, Zooms
Vantage Geramany: hawk anamorphic primes
Optar USA / Russia: *announced set of primes
IB/E: *announced set of primes


Anybody have anything to add to the list ? I'd not be surprised to see Fujinon's and/or Canon's broadcast lens divisions jump into the fray, perhaps that's what Mitch was hinting at ?

I'm not going to discuss someone else's pricing -- that for them to do. And I do not believe that Canon or Fujinon are currently actively developing 35mm PL prime lenses.
 
I'm sure the Red primes will be truly great, if the current 300 is any indication. I really want more speed than T1.9, or T1.8 in the case of the IB/E's. The Russian glass is fast, and very good quality optically. I had a Super 16 set for my A-Minima; they required major tuning up to be collimated, but once set up, they were great. I do wish for decent support; are there any distributors that can give that peace of mind for Russian 35mm glass?

In the end, I think I'll get the Red primes when they become available, but I really do want more speed, and would be willing to pay more for it. I don't want old Super Speeds, too expensive anyway, and I just can't spring for the MP's.

Of course, who knows what's coming down the pike, except for Mitch perhaps . . . .

Abel sells the complete Arri and Angenieux lines of cinema primes and zooms.
