Like I was someone that had not been there from the start, I have ser #12 I am the first person to put a credit card down on a RED.
Why would you close a discussion I started to question Canon cameras calling them selves DSLR?

I just just made a comment about cameras called DSLR's - and my comment got closed down. It was very simple, it was about competitive RED products, I was the first person to buy a RED One on the open market how can I be against it? It is B.S. I don't get it.

Yeah it is kind of bullshit threads like that get taken down. Must have happened around the same time my thread about my new timelapse reel got taken down...because it was shot on a DSLR. I'm sorry but I believe the way I use my 5D2 is totally different then what RED hates to hear on here. I use a DSLR because that is the only thing I can use to capture the timelapse I want to capture. Plus I shoot in RAW, which should totally support RED's whole philosophy about the advantages of RAW. Plus the motion control equipment I use could easily be used with an Epic...and I even say that in the post.

I understand the argument that if they allow some people to post DSLR content then there might be others. But just police the ones that get out of control. I mean there is a Photography section in Off Topic that is shot with Canon and Nikon cameras. But yet that is allowed to survive on here. Just doesn't make a lot of sense is all.

Nothing weird. You had your question answered - by me:)

Also, not that I care, but DSLR discussions are supposed to be in the OTHER CAMERAS section.

And finally, just because you have a low serial number and have signed an NDA doesn't give you the right to use foul and abusive language on this or any forum. Be professional...

This is reduser, not dvxuser where those posts might be appropriate. Brian, you're lucky you're not being banned for being so incredibly childish about having a post deleted.

If you don't believe you can get beautiful time-lapse on red you should check out Tom lowe's stuff.

whats with the rudeness?

They want to keep this primarly RED for the fact they have DVXuser, like Jakes post said...
There is enough noise with the DSLR stuff, the point of the forum is to learn about as much as one can on the potentials of RED, yes includin DSLRs could help but they aren't in the same class, its very different if you were comparing the short comings and ups of ARRI in comparison to the RED etc.

Profesional cams, profesional class...

DVXUser...anything goes but last time i saw there isn't a RED section there...so hence why there isn't a DSLR section here

Boy, what a friendly approach you have Brian. What a way to invite for a civilized discussion. Do you really think throwing coarse verbal abuse at esteemed members and moderators will help your cause?

The thread got closed down as it was not RED specific. It has been policy for quite a while to shut those threads down, regardless of who started them, as they frequently had turned ugly. Nothing personal, even though you are trying very hard to make it just that.

[…] more often than not it invites more problems than productive discussion and clutters the already difficult to navigate posts.

This is a RED forum. It is not a general industry forum. There are other places to discuss all the latest DSLR and video offerings from other camera companies.

Not here.

Jim

Thank you Brian for your carefully considered response. Based on your advice I will try much harder in the future to discern shit from Shinola. I have often confused the two, so I greatly appreciate you taking the time to illuminate the differences with such clarity. I only wish someone had told me before.

I will shut the fuck up now. Thanks again!

Best wishes,

And oscar goes to... (you deserve an oscar for most outstanding reply.)

The first thread I read today was M Weiss's "how to (not) behave on a forum"; this thread was the second: ((( :

I really hate to say this, but Red 1 is not the best tool to do time-lapse photography. I don't think Tom and anyone of us who does serious time-lapse work will use Red 1 as a primary tool. As today, we use DSLRs (still mode).
Hopefully Epic will solve the TL issues of Red 1.

Well, I'm inclined to agree that it was closed prematurely. However, given the first few responses to the thread indicated that other users felt it didn't belong here, hence the multiple requests to take it to dvxuser. Frankly, I'm a bit shocked at the initial response. It's like we have trained a handful of regular members to go into neighborhood watch mode and blow a whistle if they just see "DSLR" or the name of a competitor, no matter how it might relate to forum discussions.

Brian, you have been around here a long time. Usually you have very good things to say. Let's not ruin that. Martin made a judgement call to close the thread; he was just doing the job he volunteered to do in a way he felt appropriate at the time. I most likely would have made the same judgement call since others were jumping in with nothing to discuss and calling out for dvxuser. Which leads me to say that is a real peeve of mine as a moderator. Reading through several posts to a thread that try to dictate loosely-defined policies that can change on a whim from Jim or Jarred. Or those who feel it necessary to respond to obvious spam. If people don't think a post should belong here, it would be nice if they save the clutter and just report it quietly and let the mods do the thankless job we have signed up for.

I've gotten plenty of great timelapse clips on my RED MX. But none of the RED cameras out now can shoot star timelapse. So for the shots I want to get I can't use my RED MX and have to use my 5D2. Even for traffic timelapse in downtown LA I don't want to use my RED MX. You can trick the camera to have 1sec exposures but then it turns into hot pixel festival no matter how you black shade the camera.

The 5D2 is the best timelapse camera out there...IMO

And, Andrew, congrats on your new timelapse reel: beautiful work.

Thanks Bill. Wish it could have lived on here longer. I didn't think it would have been a problem posting timelapse shot only with the 5D2 on here because I've done it a couple times and it has never been deleted.

Yeah, R1 exposure time tops out at 1 second and we tend to get hot pixels. It's nice for TL as long as 1s or less for exposure time is acceptable. You may still need an external trigger or intervalometer to achieve certain frame rates and timings. Hopefully Epic will be an awesome TL camera.

Nikon D3s. :P

I am sorry I was the first one that referred you to Dvxuser.com. I do apologize. However dvxuser does have very informative debates on different cameras. On reduser we tend to stick to problem solving workflows and support equipment . Jeff Kilgore is absolutely right, we have prematurely become watchdogs. That is not very healthy as a community that has been together for close to 4 years. So again, I do apologize for making you swear at the mods. They are simply doing their jobs.
