As some of you know, I've been working with REDucation, and have been a REDuser for the past 2.5 years. I own RED 5721, and I love it. But wait there's more, the Epic. Today started my first day with this lovely tool. It's far easier than the previous RED, and while I learned it top to bottom, it took a while, not so with the Epic, it's an easy learn. From the quick boot up (less than 10 sec), to the well laid out touch screen menus, and the size, it's great. Lets not forget the file, OMG, beautiful. I even tried the HDRx for a few takes, and the results once brought into RCX were very good (increased detail in the highlights, and more info in the shadow area. I'm psyched that I have another week and a half on this project, and I'll chime in from time to time with more of my discoveries.

Hi Von, great to hear our EPIC and Master Primes are working out for you guys! Keep the updates coming.

(and yes, we/Keslow Camera have adapted the accessories from the RED One so AC's don't have to adjust their mounting options from what they're already used to and familiar with)

I had the Epic in the desert (Lancaster) yesterday, and no heat issues.

Thanks for all the pics Von, some really cool shots of the Epic in action :)

So being very open about my experience so far, not much has bothered me, actually, most of the things I needed worked. However, I have a glitchy REDMOTE, and can't get it to function off camera, and the SDI port is too recessed, and anyone with big hands is going to have a difficult time attaching and un-attaching a BNC cable.

We're having an amazing time with our Epic but we're still finding our way to the best mounting options/configs.

How is the back end of that ET topside combo attached to the cam? Is Brook's FMJ plate on top of the cam?

Here are some pix, you can see the mounting.

I decided to try my old RED 7" LCD on the Epic, it works, just no touch screen ability (you'll have to use grip controls or REDMOTE). You have to power off EPIC prior to changing to any other viewing device, LCD or EVF.

I have a bottom riser and 15mm front mount from ET for the Epic...apparently their top mount stuff is in production and not yet ready to ship -definitely need a top handle pointing forward over the lens (am using my 18-85 with 2x extender at the moment for doc stuff) as it's so disproportionately front heavy.

But I've also been told a certain someone over at Wooden Camera might also have something in the works sooner.

I love it also! Good post haha! I agree with the simplicity of the menu systems and intuitiveness of the configurations. Jumping into using EPIC was much easier and faster than the initial jump into RED One. Looking forward to working with it more.

I like the button assignment for focus check right on the Red Pro LCD.

Wish there was the ability to have two outs from the cam -one for the EVF and one for the LCD.

No need to worry about the REDMOTE for the time being because firmware 1.4.8 for Epic renders it essentially useless. You can connect the REDMOTE to the camera still but the REDMOTE display will not display the functions you are trying to adjust but the changes can be seen on the on board LCD. So, it works but you have no way to know because the display on the REDMOTE doesn't.
