  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I love my Scarlet BUT RED is driving me crazy! WTF?

You might want to consider the amazingly inexpensive and acceptably long focus throw Samyung lenses -- which apparently are coming soon with gears. They come in Canon and Nikon mount.

I suspect a pretty full set will be less than the Redmote Pro.
 
There are so many great options for long focus throw MANUAL still's lenses. Zeiss ZE/ZF, Leica R, Zeiss Contax, Nikkor. They don't all have PL focus throws, but many of them are extremely functional.

We just shoot a 10min short this weekend on an EPIC, Steadycam, Leica R's, wireless focus, and wireless iris control, and it all worked great. And I mean great.

You can get very compelling imagery from stills lenses if you make them work for you. And they are small.

you should be mad at canon, for making 2 different camera just to have a different mount. Praise red that they give you CHOICE. i LOVE the option to switch between PL and Canon mount so easily. Low budget? then i use my canon lenses, pull focus myself, use the focus mode on the lcd (which works great), and pull focus from the monitor, which is really doable with canon L zooms lenses.

If there is enough budget, there is money for a 1st ac, and also money to rent some decent PL glass, so i swap out the mount, and i'm happy.

You're rant is ridiculous :P. Red, from all the camera manufactures gave us the biggest scope of lenses possible to work with, can't blame them for it... It's like blaming a panasonic tv for the fact that a certain tv show you just watched had really bad actors in it :)
 
I do believe I recall a post a while back saying that no products will be announced until they are (almost) ready to ship. Jarred occasionally breaks this rule, but that's the exception, not the rule. Personally I dont' like to listen to the hype and guessing. I'd rather focus (pun intended) on what I have in front of me.

I understand the need to dig around for a hint or two when you are actively looking for something, but if you need it that urgently, bet to look at current solutions. Besides, RED makes cameras, that is their main focus (again, pun intended). I'd almost rather have them give up the accessories gig and let the 3rd party companies thrive on that end, so RED can pay attention to making their great cameras even better.

Yea that glass might still pull badly whether you put servos on its barrel or do it by hand is the reality... As a former model airplane builder I don't know why people pay so much for a servo to do something for them. The TS15 3D rig costs 250k because it has a couple servos in it as far as I am concerned...Not sure why people don't just build their own servo solution or find one already made, maybe?

My original post was kinda tongue and cheek in an effort to rally support and maybe induce a response from RED. That didn't happen I guess. LOL

Oh well.

I am about to buy my first cine lens to compliment my Canon glass so you can bet that once I do the Redmote Pro will follow soon after. I'm strongly leaning toward buying a RPZ 18-85 now. It's about the most I can afford to swing right now.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Perhaps a nice copy they'd let go for a great price? :)
 
red has some battle tested zooms you can get for cheap...

and for £50-70 a lens your ZFs can have focus gears ..buy the optitek nikon mount and your iris becomes smooth, and has a gear (although ive never pulled iris personally)
 
I use a friction gear that was supplied with my Oconnor Ofocus DM with all Canon, Nikon and other still lenses and don't have too much trouble.

You just have to master your focus-pulling skills, cause the focus throw is shorter.
 
We have the RPZ18-85 and its a great lens. I saw someone here selling one with the optitek ring and mount for about $4800? with a case, that's a great price. But beware you will need a support system. i use the 19mm rods and the arri LS-9 bridge. Works great. Awesome lens, can't go wrong. We have yet to get a follow focus for it, as we bought the zacuto one for way too much and are a little put off by the prices of the 19mm FF's. We don't have to pull focus very often in what we shoot, though.
