  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Going to have about $3k to spend on my Scarlet soon and I have a basic idea of what I would get..but I was wondering, if you had an extra $3k to spend right now on your camera what would you get? (forget post lights or anything else, keep it strictly camera related. Basically anything related to the actual use of the camera, not products that help the image in other ways) I have an idea of what I want to invest it into but I was curious to see if someone else's choices would inspire me differently. I know this isn't a lot of $ to most of you, but lately its been tight and I haven't had any substantial amount of extra $ to put towards the camera until now.

Currently my build is sparce to say the least so theres probably a lot of different ways I could go with it. Here's what I have

Scarlet Brain/Side SSD
Side Handle
5" touch LCD
Top handle
V-Mount Battery Adapter/2 V-Mount Batteries
2x 128gb SSD's
50mm Zeiss
16-35 Canon L
200$ Tripod that I don't particularly love

I don't have any decent shoulder mount rig, which is what I was thinking of throwing most of the $ into, possibly a new lens as well. You don't have to use my current equipment as any guide either, this is more of a "Here's $3,000..what would you buy right now!?"

More lens?

Oh wait, Id go with a better tripod.

Tripod and lenses I would say.

Tripods on a budget to look at are the cartoni focus HD and the manfrotto 509HD. You're looking around 1500 for either.

I'd stay within the canon world with the remaining money. Some interesting (cheap) primes to look at are the 25, 35 and 85 Rokinon cine (canon mount) lenses. Or another forum favourite is the 70 200 f2.8 ii.

Good luck, by the looks of this package you're almost ready to go!

Ya thinking tripod as well. I've been lucky where a lot of my work has worked out fine with this one, but I'd feel so much more comfortable with a better one.

Maybe tell us a bit more about what sort of things/projects you want to film. What is your goal? Makes a great deal of difference if you want to rent out your camera to drama productions, want to shoot your own youtube channel videos, or want to make art films.

save it for epic/dragon upgrade....
put it into a production/your reel....
tripod/slider...
lenses....rokinon primes or 17-55 or 24-105 canons...and with the zooms you (maybe) don't need a tripod:)....
sound equipment....
lights....
a new computer....
that other thing you always wanted....

currently I have a lot of Live Event coverage work. I work with a lot of Dj's. However I'd like to move into music videos and my own narratives. I'd like to just feel more comfortable about my camera package when I get hired owner/operator on other peoples sets.

Shoot more. Any deficiencies in your kit will become apparent quickly and as Yoda says "You will know." If you don't already know what you need, don't spend any $$. Sit on they cash until you are sure. That is my strategy to avoid regret. It's working for me. ;-)

Seven Jib Compact XL and Super Track Dolly.

Ten years from now you will have three cameras from your Scarlet but your Seven and Super Track will still be with you.

You def need more lenses. You have nothing longer than a 50. An 85 1.4 was a good suggestion. A cheap 135 2.8 is a good idea too.

Used 70-200 2.8 version I... and a better tripod..
or.. just a better tripod.. Sachtler video 18 or 20 with aluminum legs (heavy is better on a tripod for event shoots)..
OR.. Save the money, and put more with it when you can do an Epic trade in.. (renting the 70-200 as needed)...
The Sachtler tripod will also be something that lasts you 10, 20, or more years of getting you great shots.
