Damn you Ketch, as if there wasn't money enough to spend on Epic bodies ... Leica lenses ... tripods ... etc ...

Now you have to go show me the incomparable awesomeness of Briese Focus lighting -- with their $25,000-$50,000 HMI kits!!!! Damn you!!!!! LOL.

But seriously, thanks Ketch -- I appreciate your relentless commitment to the "best" -- you've really inspired me to step up my game and figure out how to better monetize my projects so that like you I don't have to compromise on my gear in any way.

Also curious to see if anyone else has experience with Briese lighting -- and what they think?

I have an shoot coming in about 45-60 days, I will be using the R1 to film a pretty famous playmate (instructional videos) for a relationship product and I'm thinking about renting two Briese kits. Maybe from B2Pro or Monster Lighting in LA ... the type of shooting will be mostly her directly speaking into the camera, or interview-type scenes. (maybe some stand-up body language demonstrations as well)

(What I like about Briese is also being able to use the S2 to shoot fashion shots of her and the other girls at a very high level ...)

If the project goes well, we will most likely have the cash flow and financing to justify a much bigger budget/purchase in terms of lighting, etc ... and hopefully by the next shoot in the summer the Epic/Scarlet will be out.

The product will be mostly web video, yet there will be a DVD option where the extra resolution will be helpful and like Jim says, it will be good to "futureproof" it with 4k anyways .....

Anyway, thanks again for the opinion/tips about Briese if you have one -- also if you're really happy with another type of lighting -- please feel free to chime in. Thx!

Anthony

I want a Ketch Epic deal. But the Honda is hitting 100k miles so I'm getting a new Minivan. PLUS I'm buying the Panchros. Damn, $80k goes fast!

I can't believe I'm buying a Minivan instead of an Epic. Somebody hit me.

Haha.. For a sedond as I sow the title on the list, I said to my self, oh oh, what did I do this time??:emote_couch:

Well Anthony,

the Briese Focus System, it is IMO the absolute best available Lighting system ever created, that simple!!

Expensive? Yes.
Incredibly versatile? Yes.
Insane light quality? Yes.

For our new Studios in Italy, is an obvious choice, as we will do lots of work on Still/Motion capture, and the Light spread of the Focus system
is so genuinely beautiful, hard yet very soft and evenly spread across the entire illuminated area, versatile were we can swap Flash heads
to craze amount of "WS" power, HMI's to have a continuos light that will work miracles on both Photography work as well as Cinematography
work, especially in 3D this lights offer fantastic ways to illuminate Sin tones with grace and beauty bringing detail yet, been kind to the skin.

Off course there is the need of a sensible budget but, when you are spending 250k/300k per each Epic/Atom rig set up, you better leave some funds for Lighting ;)

I find the Briese Focus line the only other light type we want to accompany our vast amount of LED lighting, as there will be ABSOLUTELY no Power HAngry Tungstens, those are long dead to me ;)

Just have a look at this video, for the Cinema Focus Line: http://www.brieselichttechnik.de/en/briese/cinema.html

it's a honda, it's still got at least another 50k-100k miles on it...

get an epic

I'd like to see the process of him explaining to his wife that the Minivan can wait, but the Epic is urgent! ... LOL ... but seriously, maybe she will go for the argument that the Minivan's value will DROP the second it leaves the lot, whereas the Epic will not only maintain it's value for a while -- it will actually generate funds for the family! :p

Unfortunately fiances/wives tend not to be that "reasonable" when it comes to our toys, even if it happens to be work related :)

While I enjoy a Briese for a high fashion beauty look from time to time it is not very versatile outside of a portrait situation at all.

Hey Florian, respect your opinion but it's not what I've heard from those like Ketch, Jarred, or this guy ...

Anyway, in my case I will be working a lot with sets that will be used for still and motion capture of beautiful women, so they are a good fit for a lot of what I do.

On a counter note .... I have heard that managing the large umbrellas and running the HMI power is very difficult on certain locations, and not very mobile/portable, so that seems to be a serious drawback.

Grazi Ketch, I agree with you across the board and everything I have seen from Briese (still and motion) has very much impressed me. I may rent in the beginning or find an intermediate option until our funds/budget grow and then move to Briese later this year as a more high-end and future proof investment.

Thanks again for all you have shared .... I can honestly say I never would have learned so much on this board (especially about gear) had you not been so generous in sharing. I'm sure lots of positive karma has and is flowing your way for all the help you give to others!!! ...ciao, Anthony

Steve, I've got 6 of the 150 Tungsten Dedo's and LOVE them. Have been looking at getting into the 400 HMI version. The aspheric optical design beats the hell out of the typical fresnel. It seems you're pretty happy with them?

Chris, I love the tungsten fresnels. Have got a set of them. You should check out the hmi versions. I have the 400 and 200 versions, fresnel and open face (for the octodomes). The 200 hmi is the same size as the 150 tungsten versions.

Love the modularity of the system..... bought the 400 and 200 hmi fresnels first, then got the open face heads later (which work with the same ballast). I have their great projector lens for the 400, which gives you insane sharpness.

Saw a prototype for their upcoming 1.2 hmi at a trade show last year. Looks amazing.

Hey Ketch, do you know if you can connect two Briese focus units to one single ballast (the high-powered one)? I think it goes up to 4,000w but it would be so useful if you could connect 2 x 1200w units or 1 x 2500w + 1 x 1200w ....

I'm guessing "no" ... but would be nice ;)

Buy a used Minivan. Or realize that a Honda can easily go to 250 000 miles.

look at it this way: a car eats your money, an Epic makes you money.
