  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Aside from our main suite equipped with Sony BVM-D24 and Panasonic TH65-PF12, I got myself a TH-P42V2 for the non-critical work. My personal system in consists of Mac Pro 4,1, Matrox MXO2 LE, TVLogic LVM-173W (used as easy waveform and histogram display) then now TH-P42V2 is added to replace Sony Bravia LCD display. My monitors are calibrated with either Calman/Klein K10 or Eyeone Display 2 (for the desktop).

From the MXO2LE's HDMI output, I playback the charts came with Calman to calibrate the TH-P42V2. I have done numerous calibration with BVM-D24 and all of the other displays we own and owned (including TVLogic XVM-245W), so I thought calibrating TH-P42V2 was pretty much straight forward....

To make long story short, unfortunately, although TH-P42V2 seems to adopt newer technology than TH-65PF12, in calibrating process, it is harder to get the reference level settings on RGB balance and the gamma through out the entire range. Putting everything to normal then working from there couldn't get the calibration quality that I'm used to over other displays. Don't get me wrong, it is a great great value, but not as well as I expected.

First, use the same practice as usual, set everything to normal, turning off the auto gain and everything, I usually set the RGB gain and the cutoff so the target color temp. (6500K) is achieved on entire range. Then I go to the gamma setting menu on Calman to set the gamma level I want. To get the right gamma level, you can change the gamma, contrast, brightness, lift but as soon as changing these controls, the RGB balance on certain grey level, say like 30% or 40% and 90% gets really off. This does not happen as much on TH-65PF12. Although PF-P42V2 looks pretty solid as is but since Japanese models are shipped with "standard" being higher color temp. than 6500K, so I always have to calibrate it to 6500K through out the different grey level. The preset 6500K (Low temp. as verbal choice) is way too red.
Then by changing the RGB balance starts to mess the smoothness of the gamma curve and RGB balance on certain grey level.

At this point, the best I could do was to set the preset as Cinema first (which is usually biased to be lower number in gamma, less contrast and less saturation:Cinema preset throw you off, it is not for cinema, it is actually to make "video look" looking like cinema), then set the gamma curve as 2.4 and adjusting the RGB gain and cutoff to match 6500K. By this way, I got pretty smooth 2.2 gamma curve, but the 10% and 20 % grey area shows RGB balance messed up. But this is the best overall at this point.

I'm wondering the consumer black area improving circuitry is doing something wrong, but for the RGB balance and gamma curve relation, setting TH-P42V2 wasn't easy even to compare with LED backlit LCD display.

It's greatest value in its price range, but if you were expecting more, the critical grading judgement won't be possible with this consumer plasma display in my opinion. I will work on it more and let you know if I find any way to improve this.

Note:I'm not using the MXO2 LE's HDMI calibration scheme at this point because I wanted to match and rely on MXO2 LE's HDSDI output via LVM-173W's waveform and histogram display. I didn't want to alter the signal coming out from MXO2's HDMI and HDSDI. However, if it needs to be done, I should use the MXO2's video EQ to get the right result as long as the final calibration is correct with Calman. I will look into this, too.

Thanks for such a detailed report, much appreciated!

Hi Uli,

One thing I should mention is that if Japanese models are set to be optimized at higher color temperature as default, then setting it to 6500K might not be able to optimized so please take caution of my opinion based on that. I heard of this on Sony CRT master monitor that the Japanese models are optimized to be calibrated to 9300K and export models to be optimized for 6500K.

Yes, I know about this difference. Is this a cultural preference due to the maritime, humid climate in Japan? Then we should shift to 9300 K in Northern Germany too ;-)

I think because of asian eyeballs being black.

Thanks for this, Kaku!

The V2 series is supposedly the same as the VT25 here in the USA, but without the 3D abilities -- we don't get the V2 here. Anyway, my VT25 is supposed to finally ship to me today or tomorrow.

What probe are you using with CalMan? I'm using a Spyder3-Elite and thinking of replacing it. It's been calibrated by the CalMan people, but I'm starting to think it's not reliable anymore.

Hi Jeff,

Ah, that's what I thought, there's no equivalent model to V2 in U.S.. I hear few rumors saying the VT2 performs better than V2, but it could be consumer's hype, however if it is, then it's good for you. I couldn't justify the price difference at this point.

I use the Klein K10 provided by Spectral Cal. I notice the Calman calibrating session differs the preciseness depending on the speed of the probe, so I went for the best. I don't regret for the investment after I saw my calibration looked pretty much identical to the calibration done by the most prestigious film lab. in Japan.

The Spyder has massive problems with consistency and aging. Calman started to have the DTP-94 produced again, and that used to be a very good probe.

Uli,

Jeff's Spyder comes from Spectral Cal, so initially it is tested at Spectral Cal to make sure it is working okay, but the shocking thing is that Spectral Cal dumps half of the Spyder after their test. Thanks for the aging issue warning. I did see the similar issue in Huey, too.

I found out the defaults (even with "user" preset) have way high saturation on these consumer plasmas comparing to the professional models. I had to put the saturation as low as minus 20 to get the reasonable Delta E value.

Hi guys when I've calibrated in the past I send my charts directly from the software via blu-ray set-top to the display (in my case an AE2000 and soon to be G20/42).

I just wonder what your procedure was for outputing your grey fields?

Do you send the grey fields via your editing/grading package? Just wondered how you did it - if I was previously calibrating I would use 709 disc, or rip this to my CS4 and play from there to make sure the output was consitent.

I've noticed when calibrating HC equipment in the past it's not unusual for the gamma to swing across the range, it just takes lots of iterations to get right. Often the CMS's on the panels are not up to scratch and the saturations needs lowering as final option if the CMS doesn't work.

Hi Tyrone,

I have all of the charts in file format, so I place them in FCP or Apple Color, output via HDSDI or HDMI to display them on the monitor. To make sure you are outputting the right gamma and video level, I monitor them using the waveform and histogram.

In file base charts on Apple, even using the Snow Leopard, it would display in gamma 1.8 (any still files are default to be read as 1.8) so you have to be careful. Ether check the option to bring them in as 2.2 or change them to 2.2 after you bring them in. For Apple Color, you have to adjust them using the master gamma.

Thanks Kaku. On windows this end so I'm dealing 2.2. Though I've noticed AE CS4 puts REC709 at 1.9 Gamma.

Hey Kim,

the files come with the chart generator that I bought from spctral cal. it's basically a media player that comes with USB memory loaded with the chart and USB based controller, but I just use the files in apple color to calibrate manually. hope it's not violating the copy right or anything.

be warned that when you load these up, gamma becomes 1.8 unless you change the loading setting or change them.

Hello,

Since it was brought up, I have a general question on calibration tools.

I use the X-rite (used to be Greta Macbeth) Eye-One for all my print work. When X-rite bought Greta Macbeth ..they re-named the whole kit, but it's the same as this;

http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=792

Is there a way to use this to balance screens or does the Spyder have a direct connection into some of the production monitors?

Thanks!

ATF

Andrew,

For broadcast and professional monitors do come with some sort of RS232C connections and some software work with automatic modes but usually the auto mode don't seem to work well in my opinion (I haven't come across with any good software that does it).

You can get Calman "software only" version for your Eye-one and do it manually.
