I'm on a set in Arleta, and guess who I ran into???? BigLu.. being a DIT!

EDIT: We are posting from the set.. and we are using Red #14 with a wireless HD setup for video assist playback, recording on FCP using AJA I/O... details on assorted posts here!

Big Lu is a big pimp. Really nice, genuine guy.

I turned back and put 2 and 2 together and found lil RED who is always smiling its so contagious.

Awesome set n shoot though.

Steady cam threw HD wireless transmission into an AJA box into an IOHD box into FCP ProRes 422 Loading Live with capabilities to playback instantly for the Director.

Its such a sick set up.

I am Loading live, DIT and Playback today.

To top it off we are inside a Space Ship similar to the Matrix Ship.

OMG, can it get any better?

P.S. Do we have a girl in the thread? :)

So what exactly is this shot on RED bit of sci-fi goodness?

Space ship set used in firefly....

hmm... currently searching the depths of my brain

do tell!

I'm actually really impressed with the Red tech going on. Kudos to BigLu who is managing it all! The wireless HD.. and yes, instamatic playback via AJA IO /Final Cut Pro (laptop!!) for the director and DP = wonderful! Months back I was on a big feature and we had a whole RF unit (two guys, much gear) just for SD video wireless to the video village. It is reaally cool to see a Red camera associated with higher technology.. and on a pilot show!

One thing about the tech: makes the handheld Red One setup a big deal. Both the DP and the camera operator are long-time pro Steadycam operators so they are used to big cameras (incl. 35mm), but I tried picking up the Red rigged with the RedDrive, Wireless unit, Red battery, lens, lens support, matte box, remote FF... and sheesh! THAT's HEAVY!

I believe the set is from the FireFly episode "Bushwacked". I don't have my discs nearby to confirm. Hard to say what other projects have been shot there too!

(yes, a girl on the thread.. lol!)

It is a sweet set up.
Charles Papert gets all the credit it was his Idea.

John Cordell help me get it all connected. He provided a very nice package and has camera number
#14 how RAD is that.
Its nice to have a legendary computer programmer from as far back as the 70s helping you trouble shoot on set.

I hope to post pics of the set up cuz its just that rad to be able to pull off instant playback in HD ProRES.

And the SET OMG its just So Crazy to be inside a real ship. Well kinda real.

I have to check out FIREFLY now.

And ya Sarahs an all smiles positive girl to have on set.
She knows her art work, knows composting, knows green screen, im sure so many other things.
The girl knows too much.

Thanks BigLu, you are a true gem to work with! (LOL.. I'm writing this like the other posts: two chairs away on the same table of Mac-gear.)

*Laughter on set*

#14X is a well-behaved camera, but then it has no choice with guys like BigLu and Charles and his camera people on the mission!

--well back to the fun.. I've got lots of gaffers tape to play with...

So a true Hickup.

yesterday things ran fine with loading live using FW.
The Laptop has both ports used of FW
FW 400 is taking in the IOHD
FW 800 is taking the G-Raid for loading footage to.

I kept getting dropped frames starting the morning off.
Lesson of the day.
Try using the G-Raid into the USB port
Frees up Bus space for the FW which is using the IOHD

After trying to many different things.
That was our solution.

Yeah.. but that Red camera is pretty darn decent! There was a camera burp with Red "X" on the monitors but by the time BigLu got to the camera it was all gone. There has been no down time due to Red. The imagery is beautiful.

Hey you two, stop dicking around on the board and get back to work!!! ha.

Both Sarah and Luis are great folk and I found them right here via Reduser just days before the shoot.

Shoot is going well, only wish we could post frame grabs but gotta keep things under wraps. The Camwave wireless setup is indeed fantastic, the few times I've "stolen" the camera away from my operator to do a handheld shot it's been a revelation. If only I had one of these when I did the Matrix-esque shots in "Balls of Fury" where I had to imitate motion control on Steadicam with two HD-SDI cables coming off the Genesis--bad combination of factors.

One more fun-filled day (with Seth Green guest starring) and we are off to post.

Last day on set.. The crew just got finished blocking a scene with Seth Green! Charles is scrambling around planning shots, the lighting crew is scrambling to keep up, BigLu and I are playing with clips at the video village... I'll have to scramble a couple of sets together after lunch, so er.. here I am! :)
