I have not shot or even tested the Red cameras so i can't say anything about its results work process etc.
However I find it very strange that the only manuals, booklet, instructions etc. that comes with it is about the Red power pack and especially the charger.
Nothing attached to the camera body, the cradle and others, like the batteries and charger is the only part Red company take full responsibility on its functions, the rest go figure out yourself.
Sorry, can accept that.
As I wrote, I have not shot or tested and know anything about its outcome.

Curt, I admire how you posted that response with no sarcasm whatsoever

He's got no time for sarcasm. He's busy building their Mirus, Impero, Inclino, and Origo.

Thanks Curt

Thanks Curt

Thanks again Curt.
This si not what I meant.
So there manuals in PDF and this is great but why the only printed one is about the power pack? That's I find strange.
And what sarcasm got to do with all this, sometimes I feel that most of the ots here from bored, spoiled, childish Red owners...anyhow thanks again Curt
AND I AM WITING FOR THE REMOTE FOLLOW FOCUS I BOUGHT FROM VIEW FACTOR. I AM SURE IT WILL BE GREAT.

ok, I'm disconnecting the Ethernet cable as we speak... If I don't come back in two weeks call the police. :)

I'd guess that the manual is not currently being printed because features have been constantly changing from build to build.

Exactly, the specs all change build to build. Why WOULDN'T you have the manual electronic, especially at this early stage.

The physical attributes of the camera are minimal, and pretty easily understood.

As for the rest, I hope it never settles long enough to have a printed manual!

Precisely. There's little point in wasting trees on a document that is going to change so rapidly. If the feature set and interface changes slow down, RED will probably start inserting paper manuals, but until then I'm glad they haven't wasted trees. Nothing stopping you printing your own copy in the meantime!

Who reads the manual anyway? Serious question.

Well, sometimes even after having played with it (my Red One), hum... I mean worked with it, I haven't figured out all the subtleties and some features need a little explanation. For example, how to set off a ramping, or what color corresponds to what, in false color mode :-)

Cheers,
Damien

Hello,

I read through the PDF manual. On a new $17,500 piece of gear, I wanted to make sure I didn't do anything stupid. It is odd that the only manual in the box is for the batteries.

What I would really like is a software manual. Obviously, it's still a work in progress with build 16 and a complete recompile of the various utilities. However, a quick PDF would be great to just get up and running until they (or a 3rd party) have time to put out a more complete piece of work.

Manuals are not fun to write. I wrote the manual for the 1996-2000 Skycam System after I got back from the 1996 Atlanta olympics. I made modifications to it as we traveled from 1996-2000 while on the road with the system. I definitely do not enjoy writing manuals.

They are quite handy, though!

Best,

ATF

OK, I shouldn't have tagged my last post with the "serious question" part. I was just goofin'. :)

I remember when Media 100 tried to stop printing a paper manual 10 years ago and everyone freaked out, as if they were being cheated. PDF is better they said, we can update it and won't need to consume resources.

They quickly had to print manuals and send them to every customer...

Since then I think everyone has seen the benefit (both in saving time and the environment) in not printing hundreds of sheets of paper to create something that is easier to search and read on screen. Not to mention is practically out of date the minute it goes out!

I still say it should remain electronic.

Are there any glaring omissions from the current one online?

Jim

who read the manual?

who read the manual?

Who reads the manual anyway? Serious question.

Even if nobody in the world there should be a small brochure there like the quick reference guide you get with every simple digital camera

I thought that was a little strange too when I received our RED but the cameras keep changing with the builds so it makes absolute sense... we've changed builds two times now... and with build 16 coming it appears it'll be completely reworked.

Provided they are regularly updated, pdf manuals are a great way to go.
Those who really want a printed manual, can easily send it to Kinkos, UPS Store, or whatever's available in your area. They can enlarge it, reduce it, bind it however you prefer, etc. etc.
Just an idea...

Joe
