  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

/i Electronic Lens System

Pat,

We seem to have got at cross purposes here. I have not mentioned not wanting Cookes or Ultras. They're fantastic lenses, though currently way out of my league financially. I'm bemoaning the possibility that Red won't include i/data in their own lenses, assuming stuff I've read in this thread is true. It would be nice if someone from Red would chip in here. Their FAQ suggests that all Red lenses will have i/data:

"Do the information pins work on the lenses?

Although designed to work with RED and Cooke "i" lenses, that feature is not currently enabled."

I now understand your viewpoint....I misunderstood where you were coming from....my apologies...

Good to know. The Birger mount looks intriguing.

I think it's a given from the Cooke side of things that Red will get the i/data working on the camera. But until this thread, I thought it was also a given it would be part of every Red-manufactured lens. Afterall, why put it on your camera but not your own lenses? Can you imagine Canon doing that - having connectors on their camera but none of their own lenses connecting to them, only other folks' lenses? Like BMW putting A/C controls in your car but you have to buy an A/C unit from Mercedes for it to work as designed. (Ok, it's not exactly like that. Substitute your own analogy here.)

I have to stick up for RED here. i/data is extremely important for some highend VFX work among other things - and is already available on current lenses that would or could likely be used on those projects, hence it is very important to at least have the capability on the camera side.

As far as lenses, RED is trying to offer high quality lenses at hitherto unheard of prices. Adding the encoders for iris, focus, zoom is a very substantial technical and cost challenge and if too difficult or would take too much time to engineer then it may make sense for it to be eliminated in the RED series of lenses.

With Canon/Birger I am just pointing out that by their very nature that information is there and relatively easy for birger to turn into i/data.

I don't disagree that Red is doing great things with all of their products. And I own the 18-50mm zoom. I'm not arguing about this or that lens being better than the other or what is or isn't good value for money. My point is, i/data is already (as far as I know) incorporated in my lens, and is set up - although not activated yet - in the camera. Everything I read - except this thread - says that Red lenses will all have i/data. If this is not so, I'd like to know. Does anyone have solid evidence one way or the other?

Many thanks to all who have responded. As a Matchmover (among other things), i/ technology is extremely important to me and one of several major motivations for looking at RED.

Digitalfx, thanks for your input on this thread and in the other related threads you found, contributed to, and took the time to post. Very informative.
VMax, I think we’re aligned on the subject and I appreciate your posts very much.
AquaVideoRed206, many thanks for your input.

It would be very helpful at this point (ready to place a deposit) to know if RED will officially:

1) incorporate i/data recording in-camera
2) if so, when (approximately)
3) If this ability will be provided in their lenses, and if so, which models (no online documentation provides this currently)

No demands, no expectations, just need to know the plan before buying.

With utmost respect and thanks…

-Matt

I suggest you ask RED directly.
