Hello Redsters,

I've searched the forum and have not found anything regarding the /i Electronic Lens System developed by Cooke Optics and how it relates to Red. http://www.cookeoptics.com/cooke.nsf/52614d4325c1735a85256ee7005e8edb/eb1d63d19b4c191985256e850029571f?OpenDocument

Analog rigs can record this lens data via the Cooke /i datalink http://www.cookeoptics.com/cooke.nsf/dcb2d81e7e2672ed85256e710062d65e/72c09d12311d3fee85257205005800cc?OpenDocument but as I understand it, Red One records this data on it's own as metadata.

2 quick questions:
1) Can anyone relate any experience they've had on using this technology with Red?
2) Is the only glass available with this technology provided by Cooke?

Thanks in advance for your time.

-Matt

Thanks for the heads-up Evin. Any input on if only Cooke does/will/can make lenses with this ability? I'd love to hear that RED lenses offer it...

Any idea when the feature will appear?

Many thanks,
-m

I'm referring to Red's own lenses as well as the Cookes. Granted I only have the 18-50mm at the moment and, as Evin says, the feature is not yet enabled in the camera, but my lens has the contacts for it and so do the up and coming Red lenses from everything I've read.

VMAX, great news and many, many thanks.

To anyone on the Red dev team: I realize talking about upcoming features is tricky, but would very much like to know about when this important feature will come about. Any hints?

Thanks...
-m

The Red 18-50 has the contacts, as apparently does the shipped 50-150. Not sure about the shipped version of the 300mm. I have been told that there will NOT be /i data connection on the Red primes or the 18-85, or when/if the /i data connection in the camera will ever be enabled. Don't hold your breath.

As a scuba diver, holding your breath is one of the worst things you can do (air embolism/death if you come up several feet without exhaling) but it sure would be nice to see the F stop and maybe focus info in the rear LCD from the back of the housing while you are shooting.

That would be a big negative surprise to me. I thought that all Red lenses would have i/data. That was one of their big advantages over all but Cookes. I have the 18-85mm reserved. If it really will not have this feature, I may cancel. Perhaps it's time to reconsider going Nikon instead of PL if the latter offers no technical advantages.

I think it is safe to say that PL mount lenses like Ultra Primes and Cookes offer significant professional advantages over Nikons in every respect....Nikons are a great value for the money, but are not even close to professional lenses designed specifically for motion picture production.....

Note I specifically said technical advantages.

Canon EF on Birger would give i/data too if implemented on RED.

Canon EF on Birger would give i/data too if implemented on RED, as all EF lenses provide the same type of information and it is just a simple data translatiion in software to provide it to the camera head.

I really hope RED incorporates it on the camera side even if they decide internal encoders on the RED lenses is too complicated or expensive, because other lenses already have it and it is very useful/necessary for many applications.

Good to know. The Birger mount looks intriguing.

I think it's a given from the Cooke side of things that Red will get the i/data working on the camera. But until this thread, I thought it was also a given it would be part of every Red-manufactured lens. Afterall, why put it on your camera but not your own lenses? Can you imagine Canon doing that - having connectors on their camera but none of their own lenses connecting to them, only other folks' lenses? Like BMW putting A/C controls in your car but you have to buy an A/C unit from Mercedes for it to work as designed. (Ok, it's not exactly like that. Substitute your own analogy here.)

My point is the same as this thread - i/data.

If i/data is more important to you than lens quality and performance, then go with the Nikons. They are obviously not as good as Cookes and Ultras. But I would not hold my breath for this feature ever to be enabled by RED...(I hope I am wrong).

Pat,

We seem to have got at cross purposes here. I have not mentioned not wanting Cookes or Ultras. They're fantastic lenses, though currently way out of my league financially. I'm bemoaning the possibility that Red won't include i/data in their own lenses, assuming stuff I've read in this thread is true. It would be nice if someone from Red would chip in here. Their FAQ suggests that all Red lenses will have i/data:

"Do the information pins work on the lenses?

Although designed to work with RED and Cooke "i" lenses, that feature is not currently enabled."
