  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I can READ perfectly 5K Raw or ProRES 444 on my computer without the RED ROCKET.

Hi.

A little post just to say I can perfectly read a FULL QUALITY 5K raw redcode or prores 5K 444 video on my computer without any redrocket.

I was thinking the only one problem was the Hard drive. The hard drive is too slow, the key is the SSD/Good processor/lot of ram.

In CS6 1/4 raw quality is perfectly fluid from a classic Hard Drive
The best quality is perfect on SSD.

Here my config :

- Mac Pro 5.1 but I put this processor inside : 1 Intel Xeon W3690 (12M Cache, 6 x 3.46 GHz, 6.40 GT/s Intel® QPI)
- 32 gb ram
- GTX 285
- 2 x 512gb crucial M4 SSD.

Again, if you want to improve the speed on any computer with raw, begin to buy tones of SSD hard drives, a better processor can't do anything more if you have painfully slow crap mechanic hard drive.

Just for info.

You're welcome.

I add that : I have the best performance in CS6 premiere to edit (I did tests with FCP too)

To export, don't use premiere, open after effect and import your premiere editing and then export !

After effect will use all the threads of your computer, even with Pro res export (premiere doesn't !!).

The export from redcode to 5K pro res 444 is really fast from classic HD to SSD but it is SPECTACULARY fast from SSD to SSD.

So, I will never repeat enough : Buy SSD, not Redrocket !

4750 USD, you can have around 5 x 960gb of SSD now (OWC 960 gb for 1099 USD), and soon 7x960 gb ! (crucial M500 - 960 gb, around 600USD, probably available in april)

You will be surprised by the incredible performance, even if your computer is a bit old.

in theory the pci slot ssds would be even faster throughput, but yes the IO importance cannot be understated. Too much data though these days from longer shoots, so raid 5's are a good external solution for now. relatively cheap compared to using ssds that simply dont have the capacity yet. one can fit a lot more on 3tb or 4tb optical drives for cheap and then throw them in a multi bay raid to regain some lost throughput, and then still have a massive available amount of storage.

Try it with the Sonnet Tempo HD PCI card and RAID 0 SSDs.

Really fast :)

Val,

you got those dual SSDs in a RAID 0?

Love to see some speeds posted. What's your read/write speeds? A free program to test is Aja System Test.

I too found hard drive speed gives better playback resolution in CS6.

Interesting. I wonder what the bottleneck actually was for you. Is your processor allowing you to do this? The SSDs? or the RAM?

I ask because I have raided SSDs also, but still can't get realtime. My RAM doesn't appear to be maxing out at all (16gb installed). The only other thing I can think of is going with a faster processor. I'm tempted to try adding more RAM first though.... Other RedUsers with Xeons dont seem to be able to playback in full/realtime.

Has anyone else been able to replicate this realtime performance without a Xeon?

Playback in realtime at 1/4 is not a surprise...

Diskspeeds are probably NOT doing the trick. Have been running Epic from huge SANs for a while.

The processor... Interesting...

Question is more like: What are your render speeds?

He said Full Playback at 5K.... even with CS6... I don't think his single 6 core can pull that off, but I could be wrong.

I wonder if he is rendering his timeline first. If so, well then big deal - of course it's realtime. :)

So are you talking rendered or unrendered?

I am curious if Valentin is referring to rendered or unrendered as well... I just tested some 4K Scarlet clips reading from my Intel 520 SSD and no way can it play at full res in Premiere, only half, same as from a 7200 spinning hard drive.

Specs are:
i7 3930K 3.2GHZ O/C at 4.4GHz
32GB 1866 Ram
GTX 680 4GB
Reading from an Intel 520 120gb SSD

At 1/4, it's not a surprise guys.
at 1/2, it's perfectly doable with a dual socket computer, lots of ram and a raid array.

At full speed, I don't think so, unfortunatly. Off course, you don't need a full debayer anyway on a less than 27" monitor...

Another thing, my CS6 on PC, uses all the cores. Not fully like after effects though.

Sorry, made mistake, I have to do some rectifications because the first test i Did it was with rendered timeline (I did just the processor switch with the new one) =)
now I did it with a brand new project in Premiere, adding directly the footage and playing :

I play in REALTIME R3D 5K : at 1/2 WITHOUT rendering.

But interesting : I can play 5K Prores 444 32bits perfectly too. (I am sure it is 5K 444 prores 32bits)

Just to say, after lot of tests : the Red Player DOESN'T use the power of my processor (multithreading) when Premiere does ----> WHY ?

Anyway, Shame on me for the mistakes dears.

V.
