I do not post too often, and a lot of the time it is negative. But I have been lurking around since the first announcement of the Scarlet. (3k for 3k) I have come full circle from I cannot wait until the Scarlet comes out and saving for it, to I no longer care there are other cameras out there (bought myself an 8 core mac in the mean time with the money) back again to I cannot wait.

Here is what brought me back, and why.

1. If the Scarlet lives up to what RED says it can do (I do not doubt it) it is going to be the best camera out there for under 10K. In my opinion, the 3k for 3k was a mistake in marketing. It still sticks in peoples minds. Once I got over the price and compare the said specs to anything else there is no competion for the assumed price. The specs are truely awesome for the camera.

2. For awhile I was leaning towards the AF100. My dslr is an Olympus with a m4/3rds sensor. I have a couple of pieces of glass that people are saying work great on it. Looking at the color and the dynamic range steps, HDRX has won me over, plus the the RED RAW.

3. I am currently deployed to the middle east for the Air National Guard. Being made in the U.S. does mean a lot to me, so this is a big factor for me. (I know it is not for everyone.) I get back in the late summer, so with timing everything hopefully will work out. Sometimes I wish I had a Scarlet with me. HDRx would look great with some of inside the aircraft shots, where people are boarding, or jumping out. (I wish I already had a Scarlet.)

4. I will have the money. This is an important factor. Before my deployment, (I got rid of my apartment and all my bills so all I am doing is saving), my savings was would barely allow me to purchase a Scarlet. After I was laid off from a TV station (Pappas when they went under), I was surviving on my own with weddings and local commercials (Plus the one weekend a month,) for about 2 years. (I am good with a camera, but I am a very very poor face to face salesman.) So times were tight, and the Scarlets price was slowly creeping up. But I found a job at another station (a good paying part time job! so I have TIME as well as a stable income.) So in the end I will have the money to purchase a Scarlet.

5. The Ninja. For times I do not need to mess around with RED RAW and HDRx (like weddings when needed, god I hate weddings), the Ninja will give me the record time needed and streamline the post production work in FCP.

6. The community. I maybe a lurker, but I keep up with what is going on. How the RED team actually interacts with the message board. Granted I think a lot of people are a bit overboard with the fandom, but it is all in good fun.

My gripes, only 2. The first is easy, the scarlet is not out yet!!! I would love to put money down on it. My next is RED's "professional" cameras only. I strongly disagree with this. Here is why, it isolates the low end consumer. If I bought a prosumer panasonic and I had a good experience with it, guess what, when I can I will pick up the next level up and be brand loyal. Plus half my accessories all ready work. I already know the basic of the internal menu options and the post production process of a P2 card. Heck if I have a few P2 cards it is a big incentive to stick with panasonic. The prosumer market will eventually be the high end market. We all have to start somewhere.

The bottomline, I am back on board, and I do not think you will get rid of me for a while.

AF100 is not worth the money at all. I'm very disappointed by that cam.

Red Pro only for me too. Can we hope to see a Scarlet-M owners forum here ? *hint hint*

Christian, I think your gripe number 2 is moot. That is, Jim stated that RED cameras are for professionals or those who aspire to be professionals. If the former doesn't apply to you, then it sounds like the latter does, at least.

As for RED isolating the low end RED camera owner, au contraire it enables the low end camera buyer. Modular, trade up via the brain, use all your old accessories.

Now if they could just get the firmware up to speed for the Epic, I think the flood gates are about to open.

+1 for "screw Panasonic for putting a GH2 in a more robust body, adding some $3 XLR ports, enabling more framerates (just firmware), and quintupling the price."

If it was about $2500, though...I'd probably have one.

Yep, it's just a GH2. :furious3:

christian, glad to have you back. will be even happier to have you back on the terra firma. we're pulling for you.

obviously we all want it soon! and i think we'll be happy if we're reasonable about that. also, i have a strange feeling that we're already underpaying for what we're getting. i'm not sure that RED could currently offer something at a lower price right now. as far as ease-of-use, i think all the cameras will be very friendly for professionals and aspiring professionals alike, but there are realities of cost (and like i said, it seems like the vision is more important than the profit margin right now, so let's just say thanks).

other guys, we all already know about the other cameras. if you don't... go to their website. this isn't the place to talk about that, and definitely not the place to be disrespectful when someone is sharing personal information like this by turning it into a discussion about how this or that camera sucks.

welcome back!!

Haha, don't say that over on dvxuser, it'll be off with your head!! But I COMPLETELY agree..

Personally I've seen better footage being created with the GH2..

What RED has done is big, very big. Aside from all the crazy tech they are releasing to "normal humans" they are tuning into and becoming what every company will be forced to be in the future. Truthful and transparent. There's a major shift occurring right now and big things will be happening this year!

much love..

good choice to wait for scarlet its sometimes painfull to wait but in this case its so worth it .

Agreed. No going back to an HD long GOP video camera after experiencing the creative flexibility of Redcode RAW. Especially anything in the under $10k range. :thumbup1:

Long What?

AVCHD codec or most other MPEG4 flavor video cameras in particular. Not a very good acquisition codec IMO. People seem to be having all kinds of issues with recompression for delivery after editing and getting consistent playback performance across different display systems.
