  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hyundai Spot shot in New Zealand... Epics w/ Motion Mount

is that skippers canyon? if So, I've shot there as well, in miserable conditions...I guess this is the welcoming that NZ offers..:-)

Yes it is indeed Skippers... By the time we had to drive out of there, all of those narrow, cliff-edged, winding dirt roads were slick, mudslides and quite dodgy! Not a fun drive out to say the least.

Amazing. Quick question: how much of this was practical and how much was in post? The lightning/falling tree/etc all look awesome!

BEautifully shot! You see this and you wonder why we even need Dragon. Not that I don't want it :)

Great spot.

Shoulda got Bruce to do the aerial for you. He knows his way round a gyrocopter.

IMHO I still feel the same way with my Scarlet.

I have never shot with anything other than that and I am so glad :)

I see EPIC and DRAGON at a level I will someday step up too.

Old Road - The first shot of the "old road" is a CG matte painting created from stills that our VFX sup photographed around NZ.

Cliff - The left half of the wide shot was from a helicopter in skippers canyon, the right side/crashing waves are plates Chris and i shot back home near Big Sur.

Forest - The only CG here is the actual lightning bolt, a couple lightning flashes and the painting out of one of the strobe lights. The tree falling, debris, explosion are all in camera and timed out to work with the speed of the car. No split screens or retimes here.

Bridge - The opening shot of this sequence has a full CG ground/wooden planks. The VFX guys eroded the bridge in the wide shot, making it look more rotten and falling apart. They also added some mist and painted out a river.

New Road - in camera, aside from enhancing a couple god rays. No sky replacement here...all in cam...it's what you go to NZ for!

Some of you may have seen the shot I posted from my shoot in Queenstown, NZ showing the Motion Mount in action...

Here is the complete spot.

I heard you had a few words with the post house Chris... regarding working with RED FILES... I was there a couple days after you. for a shoot. I heard a few stories. :)
hey nice job.
I love QT, I'm about to by a small farm there.

I know skippers canyon well. :) Had Alfie in the a few times chasing cars all sorts of weather. great location. !

Great job guys/

Yep. 'Tis the gyro captain Bruce Spence, a good casting choice. His finger-sign out of the ruins of his camp after the bulldozer fight in the movie "Buddies" - priceless. I enjoy it muchly but the entertainment value does not distract from the product indentity which is something some elaborate TV commercials do. You have struck a good balance.

Not really "words"... It just the usual spiel about "Post would like to shoot on the Alexa..." But Rich and I both know and like shooting on Epics, so I made my case for the added resolution, as well as shooting with the Motion Mount for the forest scene, that the Alexa had no work-around for rolling shutter issues... Now the post people are in LOVE with the Epic and the flexibility it afforded them for the VFX... I think people get burned once by someone not shooting Red/Epics properly and they base their opinions around that initial bad experience. I had to assured them that this job would be different. And it was. Consequently, I had one of my best experiences/collaboration with the VFX supervisor on this job.

I really enjoyed the AD Mark, and we had a few conversations about you as well. I can't wait to come back there one day. One of the most incredible locations/experiences I had. Truly a remarkable place.
