  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hyson MB, Why & why not?

Arri and Chrosziel have been around for a long time and
have been backed by professionals in the industry.

The only difference is Name and Cost. There is
more competition out there than before and the
quality is also being reached by these smaller companies.

It's what you get more out of for you money.

We have a Hyson MB and we're using it with our RED right now. If you are interested in a review I can PM you later. I don't have the "green light" from Joel to post anything about it publicly yet... :-) (let's just say he's pretty swamped right now and would not be able to fulfill all his orders...)

Lisa, have you tried all of the MB out there? I can attest, they are all not made the same. I'm all for saving where I can, but you have to look at issues such as how many times can something be used before it starts to breakdown. If you are renting the MB out with your camera all the time to various people, there's a good chance it will see some true battle time. If you are using it youself and don't abuse it, then sure some of the more affordable solutions work. Some of the MB use plastic parts, and they seemed like weak links for me when testing out. That's not to say they are not useable, but just make sure to weigh how much abuse you think they'll get.

Otherwise, I agree that you don't always have to spend a ton of money just because of a name. But you should try to get solid products because you end up spending the money anyway later on.

And that is not a reflection on Hyson. I haven't tried that one yet. Just responding to the sentence

"The only difference is Name and Cost."

Could you please copy a review to my PM as well

Can you post pictures of your setup? What's the ring diameter? How many stages?

Thanks in advance!

I think I'd give a go. Why not. Everything doesn't have to be industry standard. Just needs to work well.

Guys, I got the green light from Joel and I will be posting a review and pictures of our rig with the Hyson MB this weekend on reduser....

IMO - ARRI is what I've used for 8+ years in H'Wood. I've done/seen/heard stories about:

dropping, falling, crashing - do you get the picture? It's solid, like the Mercedes Benz...

Yes. I'm heavily leaning towards this mattebox + a small clip on.

As the "it isn't arri!" argument doesn't sit too well with me. So isn't RED, but if there's a good reason not to use it, I'd like to know.

Everyone gets a shot. If the product performs well, the product will probably be well received in the marketplace. If it performs poorly, word will get around quickly. But I think the RED cottage will open up and support 3rd party vendors just as long as the product can meet or exceed on set production standards.

Hi, I like what I can see on the website, I allready saw the baseplate before which looks beautiful.
I saw some remarks on plastic parts on the mattebox... could you give me any comment on that and also on your experience with the mattebox?

Thanks beforehand,

Johan Pabon

Yes, I will have a review with pictures this weekend. If I have time I may even put a little video on Youtube showing the different features, advantages, drawbacks etc.....

as far as plastic parts...I am not sure what you are reffering to. The only plastic parts are the knobs on the screws and possibly maybe part of the french flag (but I will verify this when I get back tot he Studio)

So far my overrall experience with it is positive...there are some quirks with it but the support from Joel is exceptional and it's beeing addressed. It's defenitly worth it especially for the price.... The great thing about this MB is that everything on it is adjustable! It will fit a wide variety of cameras and lenses.... I will post more details this weekend..we actually have a 3 day commercial shoot and we'll see how well it takes the abuse!

Just finished an all weekend shoot with it....I am waiting for the pics to be sent to me by the person who took the pictures on the set..once i get them (sometime this evening) i will post a review with pics!
