We have been using the Hyson MB for a few weeks now and so far we have had no major complains about it. There were some quirks originally but they got fixed in a timely matter. Let me start by saying that this is a great product especially for this price point.
The first thing you will notice when you get your hands on the Hyson MB is its quality construction. Most of it is build out of high quality Aluminum. There are some plastic parts however and those are the flags and the rotating stages. I don’t really see this as a big negative as they appear to be pretty sturdy. The second thing you will notice right away is how versatile this MB is. You can adjust everything!!! Height of the MB…side to side, each shade is individually adjustable and it has a swing away system to easily change your lenses . It also comes with a mount that accepts both 15mm and 19mm rods which is great!. (see pic)

This thing will virtually fit any setup you have. I have tested it on a Panasonic HVX, on a 35mm lens adapter (SGPro) with Nikon lenses, on the RED with the 18-50mm and recently on a Sony EX1. There was no problem fitting it on any camera/lens combination so far. It’s also very easy to transport as it folds into a very small form factor!
The MB weighs about 3.2 lbs… a little heavier that I would’ve liked…so it adds some weight to your rig but I find it acceptable, It has three stages and two of them are rotating stages. The trays are 4x5.6 for the filters. This MB can also come in a 4 stage version upon request for a small additional fee.
But enough with descriptions…how does it perform? Well it performs the way you would expect any good MB to perform. ;-) It does a great job of isolating the lens form any unwanted light and it allows the use of multiple filters. It’s a worthy investment! ). I would definitely recommend this MB…especially at this price point…not to mention that Joel at Hysonfilms is a terrific guy and his support is top notch! He’s always willing to listen and improve his product. If you don’t want to spend $$$$ on an Arri or other expensive matte box then the Hyson X-Matte box is the way to go . Let me know if you need more info! (below are some "beauty shots" and production shots)

Looks great. My only concern would be the rubber donut ring, in my experience these can wear out pretty quick. Is there a website, and what exactly is their price point?

Those rubber donut ring are easily replaceable. But I believe Joel is already working on an enhanced system.

Does anyone have lens compatibility chart?

Would it work with UP 8R, MP 14, etc...?

lol. all our apple boxes were being used on the other set... so we had to improvise and there was a box of old VHS laying around....we've put them to good use.
As far as lens compability, it appears that it will fit lenses up to 5 inches of front diameter...I will have to double check when I get back to the studio.

But will UP 8r or 14mm MasterPrime vignette? :help:

I did not get any vignetting with 18mm...and I think with a 14mm you may still be ok...keep in mind that each shade is individually movable so you could open up the shades more to avoid vignetting.... this weekend I will have access to a 9mm fisheye...I can test that and see how bad it gets.

Hey is that a 26in panasonic monitor? What kind of stand is that? Pretty cool!

Fully native 19mm and 15mm Rod Support.
Work with both.

Great stuff, looks like a perfect first matte box, maybe even a last one if it works out!

One question, do you need to order anything in a addition (other than flags) for mounting to the Red Rails? You don't need their base plate for this, it's just an alternative to the Red, correct?

Thanks!

Joel has a family emergency he's dealing with. I hope all goes okay with that. I will look forward to checking out this MB once he ramps up production.

the matte box comes with Top flag, 3 trays, and the universal mount for 15 and 19mm rods. There is no need to get their baseplate. (side flags are extra)

Yes I saw that on his website. I hope all is well with his family.

question.
does anyone know which dolly that is? (first page)
where are they selling it? is it a mod of a skater dolly?
