  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 and Scarlet X

Does anyone know if we can record 5K out of a Scarlet with the 'Look around' area active when using 4K?

I am also curious to hear about workflow when using ProRes and an opinion on the quality of the ProRes.

Thanks
Antonio

I've used the Lookaround the record via the Pix240. Since the external recorder only cares about the SDI signal in, then as long as that's what the camera is sending out, it'll work.

Keep in mind, it's using 5K of the sensor, but the SDI is still only sending out 1080p. So while you have the benefit of shallower depth of field and wider angles, you do NOT have 5K of pixels or raw video. And so far, unlike the Pix240, it does not name the files the same as on the Red Mag, so conforming back to Red Raw for grading is, I'm sure, tricky.

Thanks Nick, good to know about the look around. It's just another option we have at our finger tips. I think once you go down the 1080p route for quick turnaround jobs, it will be probably better to stay in Pro res 422 anyway.

Great stuff!

Yeah. We did it for a 48 Hour Film Fest. So, for quick turn around and short term projects, it's a pretty nice solution. I haven't actually tried the Hyperdeck yet, but the Pix240 is EVERYTHING you could want from an external recorder. It also costs like 7 times as much and is larger, so the Hyperdeck is worth a shot.

Used the PIX240 since day-one with our Scarlet. Amazing device. Every bit the quality of ops and construction that our camera is. Perfect playmates. You get what you pay for and for HD recording I am very, very happy. PRez HQ recording is beautiful. We use the 5K look-around settings all the time.

That's great! Thanks guys.

I recently bought the Hyper Deck Shuttle 2 ... I think the biggest benefit of external recorders is the workflow and the size of the sensor .. but I have a question for you guys .. I'm in a Pal area .. if I use the 5k with the look-around area enabled ... is it possible to have 25p !!

Don't forget 5k also has less noise (probably about half a stop)

Yes, you can use any of the frame rates available in 4K or 4K HD, so long you have the look around area of your monitor enabled.

I'm very close to buying one. Just 2 quick questions.. Suppose I want to record 3k 48fps.. is that possible? Also, what SSDs are everybody using/happy with?

That's the beauty of my Ninja (or Samauri) combination. I used a 1TB drive in the Ninja and it cost me a little of £100 or $160..! That's 11 hours of ProResHQ (220Mbps)

cant fault that....
