Hey!

I got a problem with the return signal my Sounddevices 302 receives from the Scarlet headphones. Most important: the recorded sound is clean! So the problem is only within the return.
The output of the Sound Devices 302 is connected to the A-Box with a ENG Breakaway Cable. The same cable is plugged into the headphone out of the scarlet and the return input of the 302. As soon as all cables are connected, I got a humming on the return. If I connect the headphones directly to the Scarlet, the signal is clean. As soon as one XLR is connected to the Scarlet and the return is connected to the 302 the problem appears, no matter which cable I use: I've tried all different cables, the moment I create some kind of loop (302 -> symmetic Signal Cable -> Scarlet -> non-symmetic stereo cable -> 302) the problem returns. I've even replaced the 302 with a Tascam DR-100 MK2. It's the same. The only thing I could not exchange is the camera itself.
I've checked also checked whether the ground is all the same: it is.

Any ideas? I could upload a noise sample, if helps troubleshooting.

Thanks for your help,
Moritz

The return cable to the mixer, - is it mono or stereo. Is the output from the camera mono or stereo?

Are you phantom-powering your mikes from the SD 302?

Are you drawing power for the SD 302 from the same supply as the camera?

The return cable is (un-symmetric) stereo with two 1/8" or 3,5mm mini male connectors (3-pin).

Similar problem here with SD 302!

Hey Scott!

I'm glad someone else got the same problem. I started thinking something's wrong with my Scarlet. I guess there are just a few people recording sound directly to the camera and listen to the return signal. I hope someone's got a solution for this...

Cheers,
Moritz

Are you powering via AC Mains Adapter - is the hum still there when battery powered.

Are you using Balanced mode on the Scarlet Audio Inputs?

Both devices are powered by battery. The 302 by 3 AA batteries and the Scarlet by RedVolt (Sidehandle) or V-Mount (x Backpack). Haven't tried AC power, because I only use it for firmware updates.

The inputs are balanced and the recorded signal is clean. It's just the return signal from the camera, that's humming. I always encourage the audio people to listen to the return, just to be sure the recordings are safe. But they'll get a headache doing it with this humming ;)
