  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Humbly Requesting...

Yes, that is my suggestion.
Yes, it is possible. Landmine Media will need to invest some time on it, but you also will get advertisers interested on paid adds on this section...just saying :-)

Ray, my experience tells me that threads degenerate after a few time because the posters don't follow formats. You can make it as simple as you want no need to add unnecessary fields.

...

Even when most recently I posted about crewing up for the Dubai job, I had many people which told me they wished they had seen that thread,
I guess I didn't refresh in off times?

No, it was because it really gets lost page after page of FS: or WTB threads... ;(

...

remember my speech ... ;-) ....

forum software is not the right approach to organize such things ... and tons of good information and contribution gets lost in "noise" ...
pleasant noise, bonding noise, whatever, ... still ... the gems get lost.

and, it just takes to much time out of the day to stay informed on the important threads or topics or people, which may be different for each of us redheads.

... to bad, that meeting on a certain afternoon, about one year ago did not happen with me, as intended ...
which derailed everything slightly ... lol

Maybe a good moment to pick up the topic and travel to the desert ... :-))

cheers,
Detlev

No blacklist please. I'd rather my name not come up on Google in that list.

+1 on both suggestions...

... right (!) .... "positive filters", "user intent" and "interest" ... as well as "connected themes and topics" are the way to go ...
it needs a damn good database design and replication design to build it and keep it running ...

...negative filtering is very powerful, too ...

but is MUST be done in a way, that it is NEVER EVER visible to any search bot .... (good point Joseph)
this must happen on the "system level" ... not with some wicked configuration tricks that someone forgets about later down the road ...

anyhow, you know who to call guys ...

hehe
:-)

cheers,
Detlev

P.S. good luck on your new language

I dont know much about forum software Detlev, thats what I would suggest a strict policy
LIKE THE REAL NAMES POLICY
Anybody not following the basic rules (in connection to jobs) would be reminded by everybody else and asked to post
in the correct format.
SIMPLY PUT
THE SUBJECT LINE MUST CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER

WHERE THE JOB IS
WHEN THE JOB IS
AND WHAT JOB/S ARE OFFERED
e.g.

GERMANY, AUGUST 2012, CREW REQUIRED

Ray, ... naming stuff will help to find it in search, but will not solve the problem, Ketch is pointing out.
What you describe is a classic database task. The miracle happens, when having a way to connect the various "databases" so they extend naturally to the users interest - either by input or history or related topic ...

Facebook is quite advanced with this "connecting thing" ... but only in small circle of friends ... AND they have HUGE security issues .... as i just recorded a screenflow to prove the existence of an image, our good Ketch himself posted and deleted (i dont say what it was ... hehe) ... but still, i could see and record it 1 hour later, and i could repeat it as well on some of my own pictures .... not good, really not good!!!!

This is bad design, among others, an order of things problem. the entire security level is just: bad.

A busy forum, with a super active community has tons of posts coming up ... and it is hard to decide where to start ...
so people establish behaviours, entry points of choice, to visit the board, some use Google alerts, some use RSS feeds, some use latest posts and so on and so forth .... any entry of choice, looses on the others.

Even in Recon, stuff gets lost, when i want to find something that i remember having seen .... and recon is kept super clean.

... the problem with todays internet is, the stitched approach .... when the explosion happened, there was just not enough time to adapt to the core powers of the technology (html)... and people (as in techies and designers alike) abused the whole thing. up to today, few seem to bother and truly understand the basic html + css .... and the big boys, namely adobe and everyone does not help by publishing antique tools, that drive the wrong approach further.

No one questions the "whole" thing. We must rethink. reset. start again.

The forementioned "abuse" of technology, of the core genius of html ...
is why the web is ugly. boring. its why it does not work. its why our economy is hurt big time ... and why we waste our human brain cycles and lifetime dealing with buggy software or stitch work approaches ...

there is tons of tools doing everything ... but they don´t work together.

to my knowledge, no one apart from humble me, sat down to actually think through this and design a a new thing from the ground up ... a better way, natural way of doing it ... respecting established standards on the enduser device site of life .... and getting rid of all the "bad stuff" ...

as some know, i sat down for 7 years straight and am not fully done, but someone needs to do this and get it right ... lol ....

:-)

cheers,
Det
