Thanks for that. You have some very helpful information there for people like me.

My pleasure! The next one in the series will be published tomorrow. It dives into form factor, ergonomics and menus/setup... also from the perspective of a cut down indie style shoot with a small team. I'll give you one guess which camera comes out on top when these aspects are under consideration!

Thanks for the wonderful feedback.

Wow, Jac, awesome post. Thanks for that! I am so proud of your involvement in this little film, and am totally grateful to you, Warrick and Leon, and the whole cast and crew. We had tons of fun, and had literally zero problems with the camera.

If anyone is interested, I'm writing up a tech series on my blog Digital Cinema Demystified comparing my recent experiences with Red One MX, Arri Alexa and EPIC. Here's the first article titled - "Sharp Shooting for Guerilla Warfare - Part 1" - http://dcinema.wordpress.com/2011/08/31/sharp-shooting-for-guerilla-warfare-part-1-bare-bones-dcinema-with-red-mx-alexa-and-epic/
Interesting take on things. I like how you came at this from the perspective of a very versatile, yet small crew. Those shoots tend to be the ones I have the most fun on. Epic is the ultimate camera for those situations, there's no doubt about it. Exceptional image quality in the smallest form factor = Independent filmmaker's dream camera. Alexa and Red One tend to be more suited for crewed jobs, where you really have most of the camera department positions filled. Having said that, I have been known to wield the Red One around one-man-crew style, in fact just did this over the weekend. It requires clever packing (I can get my kit down to a RED Petrol bag and 1 accessory bag), lightweight lenses (Nikons in my case), and a lightweight handheld setup for those times when handheld is necessary. Epic makes one man band digital cinema truly possible, although having a crew, even one or two additional people is usually going to get better results.

The offline for the ballerina is almost done, got quite a bit of online to do...

Also, need a good option of an underwater housing for an EpicM

Cheers

Humbled by the epic revolution
Since the day I first met and worked with the master of the positive Jac Mulder from muddville Dubai, with his Epic -M
'I was one of the first in South Africa to do so '
we spent 3 weeks running around like kids in a candy store shooting at every possible chance

Shoots in the can ..
* Murder at the manor
* Alice
* Trailer for Rpy Zetitsky's Fantasy movie
* My natural history Documentary , Springs

Then followed the fantastic opportunity to shoot first on Media film services brand new Epic-x, for the new music video for Trance DJ Dash Berlin

The Epic Revo;lution has truly swept me off my feet

I am now working with Jac Mulder in Dubai as their in house D.O.P for 2 months
