While browsing the thread Timur posted with the fast S16mm lenses, I was going about the website at Visual products and was confused by this:

http://visualproducts.com/storeProductDetail.asp?productID=1535&Cat=141

What do they mean about the FoV in the description?! Very strange. I can tell the lens is listed as it's true mm, because that is very typical of a S16mm or 2/3" set... however, they said these lenses were made to have similar FoV to 35mm format.... I'm not sure I follow. Does the 34mm lens have a FoV (on 16mm) like it's a 70mm on 35mm?!

I'm thinking it's a typo, because I'd imagine if the lens is a 34mm, it's going to look like what a 34mm looks like on 16mm.

I have a very solid handle on what FoV is and how it changes with format, so please forgive me if I didn't explain this well enough.

I'm thinking they mean to say 16mm.... because 16mm and 2/3" is very similar and that would be a nice transition for people from 16mm film to cinema chip size (back then)...

They mean that the FOV of the range of the B4 Fujinon lenses are equivalent to a normal S35 range, e.g., when converted they are: 18, 35, 75, 120mm, not some random sizes.

Crop factor for 2/3"HD vs S35 film is 2.59. An 8mm on 2/3" is approximately the same fov as a 20mm on S35.

The most common set of primes in 35mm is a set of Zeiss SuperSpeeds. The FOV those lenses project in 35mm is similar to the FOV of these Fuji primes on a 2/3" camera.

Very weird thing to advertise and weird way to say it.

Think of the audience, at least from the era when these lenses were introduced.

People used t shooting on 35 format cameras, now finding themselves working with 2/3" cameras. Want to use a set of lenses that will somewhat match what they were used to from the 35 format. That's what these primes are.

I've used these lenses before, they're Fujinon's equivalent of Zeiss Digiprimes meant for 2/3" cameras. They are very heavy. I agree, they mean the field of view of the lens set is equivalent to a standard 35mm primes set.
