  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quick question to put out there.... I was working with some test shots of some HDRx footage, RCX-470 and Driver 1.4.10, and I noticed that if I did "RED-ROCKET monitor out" I would only see the A-Track. No blending at all. I tried blending after I sent to monitor out... nothing. I tried blending before, and then sending out, still only the unblended A-Track. Has anyone else seen / had this?? Is there something that I didn't see in an option somewhere?? Any work arounds, or is this a wait till next build?? Any thoughts or anything would be great, Thanks.

HDRx blends are done on the GPU currently and can't go back out the HDSDI on rocket.

Hello Deanan,

We have the same problem with the RED Rocket. When will it be solved?
Also playback is kind of wired. We we were shooting some tests with 25fps project and sensor framerate.
When we DON'T use HDRx everything plays back in realtime, when we USE HDRx then the clip (visible only A-Track)
plays back in twice realtime. There are also problems with offline creation for AVID.

What's the best EPIC HDRx to AVID workflow? What grading system you suggest for best workflow?

Best regards,
Gerhard

EDIT: Is it possible to do HDRx blend and export dailies using the blend settings?

I would also like to learn more about best practices for EPIC HDRx grading solutions.

AS OF YESTERDAY----still no HDRX support out via the ROCKET CARD....Makes is a bit difficult to do a proper grade/one light if you are grading via your rocket card/RCX.

Anyone know if Premier Pro's new HDRX support is something that works ?

DaVinci Resolve handles it very well, you just get separate inputs for he two tracks and can apply anything nodes can do for you.

That said, it's tricky on the hardware side. Shuffling such amount of data back and forth between the RR, your GPU (which is doing most of the work) and video I/O is your bottleneck. Only the beefiest systems can handle this in full quality (like 12 core, multi GPU setups).

PPro has similar problems, either you get CUDA acceleration or video I/O…

Hi Uli,

Thank you for your answer!

What hardware setup do you have to get realtime performance?

What's the best way in your opinion to work with EPIC HDRx footage?
Doing a blend (e.g. magic motion) and work with a combined file or work
with the 2 seperate tracks and do keys?

Is it possible with Resolve to do also "magic motion" blend?

Thanks,
Best regards,
Gerhard

There is not much of back and forth of data shuffling going on. It's only forth, as Deanan pointed it out earlier "HDRx blends are done on the GPU currently and can't go back out the HDSDI on rocket."

It's true: for 4K RT you'll need all those RRs.
But who's displaying 4K while editing these days? We have pretty large screens, but with two windows side by side a 12 core without RR and two NIvidia cards we are getting along very nicely, editing in PPro and grading in Resolve.

We even moved our only RR out of that machine into a separate transcoding station, where it's digesting R3D to ProRes for HDTV or Blu-ray projects edited on iMacs…

Hi Uli,

So what debayer setting do you have to get realtime in Resolve without RED Rocket?
Is this possible when grading HDRx?

Btw: What do you think is the best way to grade HDRx? From RAW with the 2 tracks and working with keys/windows/blending
or working with already blended together DPXs?

Gerhard

Debayer at half standard.

Definitely from RAW, much more flexible in Resolve.

Hm...
About to play with that a bit in the near future. A bit more seriously, that is, but I have found that the magic motion blend is quite powerfull...

And the motion estimates aren't part of the resolve blend, methinks...

Any thoughts on that.

I think I see situations where a mm blended exr sequence at rc/rlf would make some pracrical sense, but maybe I am off?

Cheers!
