Hello,

I have a question about the HP Dreamcolor z24x for VFX and color work. When set to BT. 709, the luminance is very low, which is of course normal for Rec.709. However I am used to work on monitors with much stronger luminance/contrast levels. So my question is, is it a problem to enable the "dynamic contrast" option in the menu and does it affect in any way the color accuracy of the Rec.709 calibration? Or as an alternative, I could set the luminance to taste/max (which is at 28 on factory calibration).

Thanks for your advice
Jeremy

what is your luminance set as? and what is your gamma set as?

The viewing environment plays a part here. 2.4 and 120cd should be viewed in a fairly dark environment. Lighter environment will reflect off the screen and reduce contrast.

The internal settings and control labels mean very little. You've got to actually calibrate the monitor from a color-managed output or it's simply not going to work. And most colorists I know are not happy with the Dreamcolor monitors.

Thanks Marc, I've calibrated the monitor internally using the HP X-rite iDisplay Pro, I just want to make sure that I'm not affecting my calibration by adjusting the luminance to taste
If the overall peak white video level isn't 100 nits (standard for Rec709 / BT1886), you've got a problem:

Thanks for those links - After extensive reading I upgraded to Eizo CS240.

I've read a lot in the forums that it makes sense to use a Blackmagic decklink to send a broadcast video signal to the monitor.
How much of a difference is that compared to connecting my NVidia GeForce Quadro K1000M via DisplayPort to the reference monitor?

Thanks

The Eizos are actually not bad. You do have to use a color-managed output for color correction, and as far as I know Resolve will only recognize Blackmagic Design video cards and playback devices. It's also possible to calibrate through the Blackmagic output directly from Resolve's signal generators, provided you have the compatible software and sensors (pp. 485-486 in the manual).

Thanks. Sorry if this has been asked before, but can you tell me why the output has to be color-managed if the monitor is already calibrated?
Is it a problem to send my GeForce Quadro output to the calibrated Eizo via DisplayPort? (I'm in Speedgrade)
