  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HP 820 Tower - RED EDITION

i really can recommend building a hackintosh. i just built one with two thunderbolt ports, nvidia gtx 580 3gb vram, 32gb ram, intel 3770k, ssds, fire wire, usb3, everything you need will work with a few drivers exchanged. I edit almost everything in fcpx. it is so fast! there is no latency in playback when you move the mouse over the thumbnails, even with multiple effects.
looking forward to edit r3d files from my bt one mx!

I just switched to CS6 via the Creative Cloud Subscription. I have a new 27"iMac and have used the external Sonnett T-Bolt Red Rocket and Premiere. I liked the combination so much I really looked into the Windows type solution. The drawback is having ProRes source materials and being asked to output ProRes for deliverables. I have many Thunderbolt drives and besides the speed there is the fact that it has video and data in the chain. If there was a Windows Prores option I think Adobe on windows would be a game changer in video. The fact that Apple keeps ProRes so close leads me to believe they have a stake in the Mac Pro market still. But I am not holding my breath.

Well Apple has said that they will release new Mac Pros in 2013. I can't find the link now but it did come up and they did confirm that they are going to release them.

heh heh heh... :) Word on the street is that Apple has left the pro tower game for at least another year, if not forever.

Unfortunately, I think it is time to either wait and painfully milk everything you can out of that 5 year old mac pro tower, or move on to the dark side for your heavy lifting needs.

Damnit! Apple used to be 'the dark side'... I'm totally not cool anymore.

While there are a couple workable solutions for ProRes on Windows, I think the best option out there is a new Mac Mini with i7 CPU. Encode to DPX, TIFF, EXR, etc.. or other pristine format and then re-encode on the Mac. Boom. Done. Better yet, get a new 27" iMac -- they're nice, really. Even for you Mac haters, you should take a look.

Thankfully, I've all but eliminated ProRes from my workflows... Great codec, but the whole being tied to QT and locked into one platform (with the exception of bastardized solutions on the PC), just makes it a pain in the ass these days.

ProRes is history in my workflow. And I got a iPad and Apple TV for the kids/family. So having said all that, I'm set on a PC/Windows solution for editing RED (and doing a whole bunch of other stuff on that machine - including Pro Tools, Cinema 4D, After Effects etc).

Is now a good time to pull the trigger on a Z820? I can hold off for a couple of months if anyone knows for sure that something RED-specific is on the horizon. My painpoint is the thought of needing a RED Rocket. I'd love for a Rocket-free or a non-proprietary solution to make its debut.

Jeff, since you eliminated Prores from your workflow... what codec are you using? (I am at the moment on both Mac and PC, and using DnxHD..so far so good) I would really like to know what you are using.

Not Jeff but I, like you am using Avid's excellent DNxHD codec. It is cross platform and free. Love it.

Also not Jeff, but wanted to add to my earlier post that i'm currently using MBP/AVID/DNxHD 36 for edit/Resolve for cc.

Depends on the project at hand, but usually I stick with the native R3D's where I can, DNxHD most other times. ProRes is still a part of the workflow here and there where applicable -- if I have to deliver ProRes or need to work with clients that feel they have to work that way.
