Hi,

I am new to RED production and really need some help. After shooting, the disk had problems and had to get the footage recovered using a recovery company. We just got the R3D footage after the recovery. Checked some of the files using RED ALERT and they looked good. Sent the footage to the editor. The editor is saying that he had to send these to RED technicians first for creating proxies, and even then it is not working. FCP is taking many hours to load and not able to edit (because of missing RCD files ?). He now needs to get RED technicians to convert the entire footage into uncompressed quicktime format and completely unlink from the R3D files to create a new footage source, and then only editing can start.

My question: Can one use FCP directly with just the R3D footage (no other accompanying files) for editing? How?

Appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks,
Tapan

no you need proxies to edit strait from disk.

I recommend working with QT pro rez for your offline anyway it makes for a faster more reliable editing. you can use clip finder to online the R3D files in the XML

.....I recommend R3D data manger it's recovers and resorts the r3d in to RDA folders and re-creates the QT proxies www . r3ddata . com

hope that helps

Thanks, Tom.

I do not have the RED disk, but just the recovered footage in a different disk.

If I use your recommendation
"I recommend working with QT pro rez for your offline anyway it makes for a faster more reliable editing. you can use clip finder to online the R3D files in the XML"
Do I still need QT proxies or R3D Data Manager?

Thanks.

no, but you will still want clip finder to do your online XML
you wont need the proxy files for this work flow.

R3D-QTPR(LT) (using RCX) -> FCP [EDIT] -> XML(QT) (clip finder changes the .mov for r3d in XML) ->XML(R3D) -> Color(grading from r3d) -> [Final output]

SIMPLES:-}

but if you still want to go your way.....

R3D-DM will put the files in to RDM files for you. but you have to trick it in to scanning for the files so put them on a external drive on there own and get R3D-DM to scan and find them, check the sort box and QT generate button.
(you have to pay for r3d-DM but it isn't much and you get a 30day trial so you could just use it to solve your problem and not pay)

if your not fussed about the RDM files i would just use clip finder import the folder with all the R3D's and then go to Edit>make quick times that will recreate the proxy's.

Thanks a lot, Tom. Will talk to the editor about your suggestions and let you know how it worked out.
