  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How to set up sync'ed 3d playback from cams on set?

Hi Gunleik,

Using the GigE Cable, you will randomly be a few frames out re: playback, sometimes you will be lucky and they'll be in playback sync (very approximately say one out of 25 efforts (which is obviously not good for testing shutter sync!).

For true sync playback, a 'Cheap' option is to mux the hdsdi feeds into a side by side via a Hi5-3D then loop through the muxed sbs onto a 3D monitor via hdmi/ dvi and hdsdi (onto either a cheap 3dtv, more expensive hdsdi 3d monitor or a dvi 3d monitor). The Hi53D also does anaglyph out onto a portable monitor, this can be a good solution for lineup/checking sync.

On the last 3D shoot I was on, I notices that in 3D mode with the GigE cable attached, both cams cleverly playback in stereo onto a hdsdi monitor automatically when in Master/Slave or Master/Master mode, which was really neat. Also check they have different IP addresses set to one another. Not much to it really ;-)

PS You will still need a Lockit or Denecke (with 3D mod - available from Richmond Film Services in the UK) to get your cameras in sync.

Hope this makes sense! Hit me any questions if not.

Cheers

3D Playback sync

Heh heh, yes I'm new to this!

Forgot to say that be careful of the hi5-3d, sometimes they can add frame syncing to the signal (this retimes the cameras and knocks out genlock/shutter sync). Test fast hand movement and you'll soon see if this is the case or not. If it is, roll back onto an older firmware version on the hi5-3d.

Also check that the GPIO menu section of the cams is set to external genlock source.

Cant think of any gotchas right now... Oh yes, if you're running the 3.3.3 beta firmware, autofocus will put the cameras out of sync and you will need to change frame rate / resolution to reset.

This below make for a better checkout?:

Good luck!
