Hey guys n' gals,

Is there any easy way to use Crimson (or another tool) to replace the proxies in an FCP timeline and add some basic grading to them?

e.g I edited using the _M proxies, but I'd like to do a very quick finish to SD with the _H proxies. I would also like to batch create and grade new _H proxies to use as the replacements in REDALERT

This would make for a super quick (although not full quality) finish for TV/SD.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ed.

You can move -M proxies , and then run FC project , in Final Cut you will get error message and you can reconnect media . And then you need to manual put all footage step by step and select _H files. Also you can do same in sequens menu , just select file and chose reconnect media.
You will need to render footage , because siqens was for _m and now it is _H i thing sow.

i was told the _H proxies are just the _M proxies scaled up. if this is true you would gain nothing by going to the _H proxy.
can anyone confirm?

No. Different proxies pull different streams from the RAW file. _H pulls the 2K and _M pulls the 1K on a 4k file. They clearly look different when you view them. View a _M at 200% in QT and it's instantly obvious.

I thought about doing that, but it is not really viable with a real sequence with 100+ clips.

The _H proxies (at least to my eyes) look a lot nicer scaled to SD than the _M proxies.

The "graded _h proxy" you refer to doesn't really exist and it's kinda confusing to phrase it that way. You can't grade a proxy. You can grade an R3D or you can grade the R3D rendered to something else like a ProRes QT.

So I think doing a standard Crimson round trip is what you're looking at.

Even if you edited with the _H proxy I think you'd be in the same boat. The only difference there would be you could skip RedCine/RedAlert and export via compressor, bring those files back in and grade in FCP or Color. If this is what you really wanted to do then I think you could export an XML, edit the XML to point to _H proxies instead of _M and import that XML. (theoretically something like that should work, but Ian would probably be the guy to ask). Perhaps Eskatonia is correct in saying Crimson could do this somehow.

EDIT: Maybe you can grade a proxy in FCP and export that from FCP or Compressor. That might work and save a render. Never tried it.

EDIT2: Ok, I just tried this. It works. I rendered a _H straight out of FCP with a CC and it looked about right with full 2K quality. I'm sure I could export via Compressor and get whatever size and crop I needed.

If you want to use RedAlert for grading I think a standard Crimson round trip is what you're going to do. If you want to grade in FCP and export from there then some kind of XML editing should get you a new sequence pointing to _H proxies.

The day we can take a proxy sequence through Color is the day things get a lot easier.

O.k maybe I'm wrong on this, I thought you could create a basic one light color corrected proxy using RED ALERT... but having just tried it, I couldn't create one, which is a shame.

Looks like a bit of XML editing is called for to get the _H's. Then I'll probably just render the whole sequence out and use color to finish it.

ok my mistake i may have used the wrong _""
i think it was that the 4k proxy is the 2k proxy scaled up to 4k. again i could be wrong. either way its a matter of taste for oversampling depending on your deliverable if you arent debayering.

well you can render out a one light in fcp using redalert for the color/gamma settings. but the proxy will have to be transcoded over to prores in fcp through via the batch processing window. is that what you mean?

I double checked this and it didn't work for me either. Perhaps that's supposed to work. Seems like a cool idea. Log And Transfer is supposed to allow you to apply a look created in Red Alert to the files you're bringing in. I tried that and got a crash.
