  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How to remotely power the Epic on and off?

Redmote Start-Stop and Range

Redmote Start-Stop and Range

Hello All,

With the 2.0.2 remote firware upgrade, the redmotes have now a full range between 25 to 50 feet and remain active at these distances. Strangely enough, one remote has 20 feet better range than the other, but 25 feet from the camera is adequate for most remote starts-stops. The Mac software upgrade was simple. Currently using the Alpha verserion of Epic 2.0.2 with playback - besides a few hiccups once in a while - the firmware seems solid.

Cheers,

Richard

Lots of Epic-Xs

I had the same problem!

Had to go "low tech" with my solution ;)

I love this solution. Reminds me of the machines that turn themselves off when you turn them on (YouTube search for Useless Machine).

Remote start stop is easy, it's the remote power cycle that's the problem.

We have a solution being worked on but lots of other things taking priority right now.

Thanks for the update. As soon as the solution is available and rear SSD module is available I will be in a position to reveal a very significant product for the Epic...a revolution in underwater 3D imaging...nothing like you have seen before, not even close...waiting (im) patiently :)

Good to know Deanan, really looking forward to this option.

To all,

Out of necessity Gates has developed a low-profile solenoid solution for remote power-on of EPICs in DEEP ATOM. A small PCB (.75 x 2") contains several functions:

* Remote switch translation to activate a solenoid mounted to the side of each EPIC. Can also activate one solenoid for 2D use.
* Remote switch translation to activate Record / Stop via the sync port on one EPIC.
* Isolation of power spikes / transients due to solenoid activation / deactivation.
* The switches are 'bulletproof' with a solid tactile feedback.
* The PCB can be mounted or spliced into a cable with adhesive shrink wrap covering.

I am interested to recover R&D investment, and so offering this solution for sale. $975 for the PCB, 2x solenoids, EPIC mounts, 2x switches. 90 day warranty. Availability in late April.

If you're interested PM or email JohnEGates@sbcglobal.net.

What is the progress on this? Is it possible to say what the solution will be?

John:

Are the remote switches waterproof/cabled or are they internal and we activate switches via our own pushbutton or shaft? Could you send me a picture? Or post?

Mike,

All components can reside inside the housing. You need only a push control to activate a momentary switch. How you rig the components internally is left to you. You can also have an external switch if you like, but again that's up to you how to rig it and waterproof it.

And for those wondering, the solenoids are low profile to minimize impact to IO on 3D rigs.

I can't disclose details, but a customer is using this Power On Solenoid for aerials. The problem is the cost of landing to power cycle the cameras when the EPICs lose sync. No more. I'm informed they got the 'money shot' within seconds of an airborne reboot.

BUMP.

Did a solution ever materialize? Operating a side-by-side 3D rig w/ the power button obstructed is a royal pain!

I think it's still the redmote (that's what I use at least) ... near term there will be a some kind of ipad app with the meizler module (i'd expect RED will show the ipad app at NAB since the Meizler module is just about to be GA, but i'm just guessing). I wounder what the hobbit guys use (do they turn on/off all those camera's manually)?
