My apologies if this is talked about elsewhere, but I'm in a bit of a hurry. I need to record audio into my Scarlet as a scratch track. How do I do this? Do I need an A-Box from Wooden Camera? Or can I simply plug in a mic through one of the 2 1/8th inch jacks?

Thanks,
Mike

only if you need a xlr mic do you need an adapter from wooden camera or an adapter cable from others, including the stereo model from hosa. otherwise plug any mic into it and turn audio recording on. condensers need p+48 other wise just plug it in. worse that can happen is it wont work.

Yes, this has been covered before (but it still is not intuitively obvious to any of us ...)

Chances are you won't be able to get sound if you plug in a random mic. The expected configuration of the male 3.5mm jacks are (info courtesy of RED Support):

1 / sleeve / ground
2 / ring / cold
3 / tip / hot

.... where the 1/, 2/, and 3/ are the corresponding pins from an XLR connection.

But you probably want to stay 3.5mm to 3.5mm and not deal with XLR ( ... ??? if you want XLR to 3.5mm, try RED's cable or one from HOSA, the HOSA XVS-102F. NOTE THE 'S' -- GET THE STEREO VERSION) .

Again, it depends a lot on what mic you are plugging in (a powered mic, I'll assume, and not needing 48V phantom power). If you have a Radio Shack
handy, you can try their (or anyone's) 1/8" Stereo Jack to 1/8" Mono Plug Adapter

I have a RODE Stereo VideoMic (the $249 model at B&H Photo) and with a Radio Shack stereo (female) to Mono (2 male right angle plugs), I get pretty good
results with the RODE into my Scarlet. The cable is Radio Shack 4" 10.1 cm) Aircraft Y-Adapter SKU/No. Cat. 42-2495

Good luck & test/check carefully before 'committing' to any cable combination -- some setups are susceptible to RFI.

I use a Mogami Gold Stereo Mini (3.5mm) Male to 3-Pin XLR Female Microphone Cable with my Sennheiser ME66. I didn't want to add more bulk and heft to the camera, so I wanted the cable instead of the Wooden Camera solution.

It works perfectly. It works with phantom power. It has been known to record better sound than the sound guy's equipment.

$40 at B&H.
