If im trying to get a silhouette type shot how do I exposed for it. I clipped the blacks halfway in this test I did but it has crazy artifacting in the footage that I cant stand https://vimeo.com/66597401

It's not just exposure and post, it's lighting too. There needs to be a difference between the density of the shadow side of your subject (the area you want silhouetted) and the density of the walls of the room, or the windows. The greater the difference, the easier it is to expose so that your subject is silhouette against a lighter background.

If there is too much light bouncing off the wall behind the camera, put a large solid (12 x 12 or larger) up to take down the ambient level from the camera side.

It's quite simple, if you want clean darks then you need to make sure not to starve the sensor. In other words always have enough fill light so that your left "goal post" is not pushing up at all. and then you can simply use the iso slider to push down the light level as far as you want it to get closer to the light levels that you want. Then later in red cine you can adjust your curves and contrast levels to taste. The problems arises when the sensor does not get enough light to produce a proper image.
