  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How to mount a consumer microphone on the scarlet

Just so im clear as im no audio expert; I can buy this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...nology_XVM_102F_XVM_102F_Angled_3_5mm_to.html and plug my battery powered lav mic, as well as my shotgun mic?

Barry - based on the admittedly scattered audio info over in the Epic section your cable choice seems to be what they are recommending (whoever "they" are...).
That thread:
http://173.199.159.58/forum/showthread.php?69496-No-audio-from-Sennheiser-ew100&highlight=microphone

Note in the thread there are some menu selections within the Audio area to be correctly selected.
I ordered the 1ft version of the above cable, to use with my XLR cabled Sony dynamic mike off my BetaCam.
If I get it and the camera working together before this is resolved by someone else, I will post my results. Need the Brain to show up first...

PLease RED team... allow us to use the audio input. It really is essential in matching 100s of clips with audio recorded separately. Tools sync up the audio automatically... but there needs to be some audio with the video. Thanks.

+10,We need this, because we need scratch audio track for Audio Dubbing, and sound syncing ,please allow us to connect an ordinary microphone like this http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ECM-DS30P-Electret-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B0007N55K0?tag=53363388-20,
Thank you

First off a microphone should not be mounted on any camera, its the wrong place. Camera Noise, wrong perspective, action likely to be off axis of the mic will record cameraman's movements and breathing.

However you wanted scratch audio ie not for programme use but for guide only, you could use a NATO rail and a sight mount these are inexpensive and can be found on line or from gun shops. A much better use from their intended purpose.

Tonaci had this picture of a Sony mic plugged into the EPIC and working but I guess it doesn't work any more since phantom power is disabled :c
http://redmodz.com/mini-mic/

Now I am TOTALLY confused.

Previous posts in this thread (and others) have said that you CANNOT use stereo plugs, because the 2 inputs on the Epic/Scarlet are mono balanced...

But the microphone Tonaci is using in that picture is the Sony ECM-DS30P, which is a stereo mic.

Why won't Red respond to any of these questions?

Why couldn't Red use mini-XLRs like on the Red One?

Using these mini-jacks was just asking for trouble.

I still don't have working audio on my Epic-X.

With the A-box, there is no confusion, it just works.

You know, I'm surprised Red doesn't just buy a 3rd-party stereo microphone, call it RedMike, put a label on it, and stick it in a slot in the front of the camera. I have no doubt people would buy it.

Can anyone confirm whether the Sony ECM-DS30P mic still works without phantom power? I'm assuming it would because, although it's a condenser mic' it's a 3.5mm jack for plugging into a laptop or voice recorder input, neither of which provide phantom power.
