Okay guys,
I need to ask this one right out - How do I get the same contrast/colour and well image in general from my render as it looks in Redcine?
It looks so glossy, and vibrant in redcine then when rendered it seems the contrast is set about 30% too low.

I have tried using different colour spaces, but to be honest with you it would be great if somebody pointed me in the right direction on this one.

Thanks,
Ivan

I'm hitting the same issue. I think Redcine operates at a 2.2 gamma and the rest of the the mac world is 1.8. Then throw quicktime into the mix and you have gamma nightmares. I'm still trying to work it all out.

Same thing in redalert. I've tried my monitors at both gamma settings, as well as having the fcs2 quicktime compatibility on and off.

It would be great to also hear from those working in the field who have gotten successful results, perhaps from Red staff too as it it a rather important issue that we need to resolve.

Many thanks,
Ivan

Ivan - need a *lot* more detail than this to even try to diagnose. : )

Settings in REDCINE? OS? Logfile? What format are you trying to render? What application are you analyzing colors in after the render? etc, etc...

Hey Lucas!
Long time no see. Hope you been well. Did the rest of your travels go well?

Here are the details of the shenanigans I've been up to with Redcine:

OS X Leopard

New MacBook Pro

I have been rendering FROM 4k 2:1 into either 1080p or 780p.

The file format I have been rendering to is Quicktime h264.

Unfortunately I have been viewing this all in either in quicktime or VLC as we haven't installed final cut yet (which we will be soon).

In redcine the colour spaces I have left to default eg. Camera RGB and Gamma RGB. (as to what the difference between these 2 colourspaces is, i have no idea - should I be doing adobe 1998?)

Interestingly I just tried to render the same file from Redcine but it is only allowing me to export as a tiff... what the?? This is news to me.

Hope thats enough info :)

Welcome to gamma hell... Also simply known as blissfully working on a Mac. It's a constant battle, the best you can do is calibrate your monitor with a target gamma of 2.2 and D65 color temp. Turn on the FCP compatibility in the QT preferences. Cross fingers, pray to all higher powers, hope for the best. May just want to preview on a good broadcast monitor or at least a PC before you ship something out the door to a client.

Cool, thanks for the link Ryota.

Though I can't seem to find the FCP preference box in the Quicktime menu. I am assuming this is largely due to the fact that I havent installed FCP yet.

Maybe...

Please check QuickTimePlayer's preference.
It is not QuickTime of SystemPreference.

Hey Ivan,

Rest of my travels did go well. Although the night after the presentation, my friends in Tokyo took me out to this spicy Ramen place where you order from "1 to 10" for spiciness. The last time they came to LA, I savaged their taste buds by taking them out for really spicy Thai food, so some payback was in order. I ordered a 10 to satisfy their lust for revenge. It was your basic Ramen dipped in pure chili paste. Lots of Sapporo needed to kill that. My flight was the next day. There was much sadness.

Back to REDCINE...

It does sound like Mac Gamma hell wrt the QTs. TIFFs - don't know what's up there. If you create a brand new project, can you export something other than TIFFS?

Best,

Lucas

Lucas,
Haha, remind me to never get Thai food with you :P

RE: Tiff and redcine. It is still happening. Will only allow me to select tiff to export. gr.

I will reinstall it, but this only occurred after I updated the OSX yesterday. So maybe it has something to do with that.

Will try reinstalling redcine to see if that helps. Oddly, Red alert can export to other formats fine. Hm.

that option will appears in the quicktime player menu when you'll have FCP2 installed and upgraded.
Than everything will work fine.

Hi Lucas et al,

I'm having the same gamma issues using RedCine to export Quicktime MOVs on my PC.

TIFFs export fine with the correct colour rendition.

I'm using Windows XP SP2 on my Core Quad 3.2GHz with Nvidia 8800GTX 768MB video card, latest drivers, monitor Eizo S2411W calibrated with Spyder2.

Methinks this gamma issue is Quicktime related. I'm using Quicktime 7.4 (PC version) and for playback using Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 and ffdshow.

Incidentally, which camera and gamma settings should I set in RedCine to match my sRGB calibrated monitor the best?

RedCine Log

Cheers,

Paul

I have the box checked in quicktime player. it all looks good. but what happens when i want to send an h264 movie to a friend who does not have final cut 2 installed, and a monitor calibrated to 1.8? is there a final step you can do at the end to make everything you did on the final cut station in 2.2 work with 1.8?

I've been struggling with this as well on the mac side. I think it comes down to a gamma tag on the final quick time that is written incorrectly by Final Cut. If we can figure out a way to remove the tag then it should not try to convert and all will be well.

I saw a "this should fix it" executable that someone created, but I can't run it on mac and don't really want to run it on PC because it may just "fix" my pc perminently (mal-ware)!

Anyone know how to remove the Gamma Tag from a quicktime?
