  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How to genlock two Red cameras

Anders chart is pretty much how you do it, but you'll actually need one tri level sync generator for the cameras, and a completely separate one for the frame sync generators. This is because you have to send the frame sync generator a 720p 59.94 reference signal and you have to feed the reds a 1080p 23.98 (or whatever your timebase is). We have been using AJA FS1's and AJA Gen10's to genlock the shutter's and HDSDI of Reds. This setup worked great with a transvideo 3D monitor and a davio/Hyundai setup. The Cine Tal Davio is also a cool 3D tool.

We just finished our first red stereo bootcamp week at LocaRed in Paris, and we used the same Transvideo monitor which is just a must-have tool for this kind of project.

The problem is indeed that the Red cameras don't pass through the synchronization to the HD-SDI outputs.

From what we were told by Red this is on their agenda for future builds and hopefully we'll get that feature soon.

In the meantime we use a Panasonic sync generator between the Reds and the transvideo and it works just fine, but this turns out to be quite a bulky setup for exterior shoots.

We're also beta testing the Spectsoft solutions (Rave-3D Live) and this setup sounds really interesting as well. Anybody interested should get in touch with Ramona, these guys are really onto it and can definitely boost your stereo projects a great length with their tools.

Working in stereo post with the R3Ds and Scratch is such a pleasure. We had real time 1080p stereo viewing with two polarized projectors to do all the editorial and tweaking during the bootcamp.

We'll post some pictures soon.

Since we haven't gotten to matching the SDI output results to the r3d files yet I can't comment on if these do or don't match.

However, I am saying we did manage to get sync and in phase on the SDI outputs with a single tri-sync AJA Gen10. Agreed it did like being fed 59.94 with a fps of 60 best but all the ones I mentioned on our website were in-sync and in phase, making it watchable on the 3d Live unit. We did run the units for some time to also insure cadence wasn't drifting which was more of a concern from the start.

Arno, now that you have the same set-up maybe you can do some testing also and let us know what you find out. Two days certainly isn't enough to test and re-test this with all the setting combinations.

FYI, we are offering a free version of 3d Live that will have all the tools for anyone to do these tests. We were not so worried about the actual stereo rig set-up for our testing and simply put the REDs sitting on a table (so no worries you don't need a full blown stereo rig to test this, just two REDS). I can be contacted direct to obtain the free version.

P.S we are adding in support for the Hyundai monitor as I type.

Cheers,
Ramona
