How to encode 3D for TV display?

Gentlemen,

I have a project that I need delivered to a customer who wants to play if off a 3D Bluray and onto a 3DTV, a plasma, DLP, whatever, which would mean I need to encode to side by side format. So far, I've always delivered data files to my clients for 3D projects and monitored directly from my computer onto my DLP monitor, but never had to deliver a Bluray. How can I go about this? What software do I need to encode side by side and then how can I burn it onto a BD? Are the only solutions bulky and expensive hardware encoder/burners or is there something easier/friendlier?

I know the new vegas supports 3d blu ray encoding and burning, and net blender. only ones i know of right now

Just a thought....I work at a studio doing 3d conversions. At first, before we had a script in nuke to convert our side by sides, we were taking our side by side comps 3840 x 1080 and scaling the x by half to squeeze the side by side into 1920 x 1080, so each eye was 960 x 1080. The 3d tv would not auto detect it but if we went into the tv settings and change it to side by side 3d it would! So I assume, if you take your side by side and render them into a 1920 x 1080 in After Effects, and then burn it to a blu-ray if shouldn't have a problem playing. I have not tried this...this is just an educated guess.

You will only need to encode to the MVC blu ray 3D format if you are delivering a commercial disc or if retaining full horizontal resolution is required. If not, you can use any blu ray authoring tool (Roxio Toast may be $99) and you can encode a single 1920x1080 side by side file. Of course the quality is lower, but most people are very unlikely to notice this unless you evaluate it side by side with full res. Right now, Time Warner and many other broadcasters are still using side by side so it would not be at all unusual to deliver in this format. All your client needs to do is manuallly set their TV to side by side 3D mode and it will all work perfectly fine.

As an aside, we are currently using NetBlender DoStudio for MVC 3D blu ray encoding at it was no where near $80k.
