Hello,

Anyone remember how to deep format a RED SSD (1.8"). I had Red support walk me through it once, years ago, and need to do the same thing again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Nick

Pretty sure it´s the secure format. You´ll find it Menu>Media>Utils…>Secure Format. This performs a low level format, you will have no access to any data previously on the mag (No RedUndead).

Cheers

Thanks guys, but the procedure I remember going through with the Red team member was done through a Mac, not the camera itself.

You can do a secure format on the mac disk utility and write it out with Zeros and then put it in the camera and format it again.

Thank you :)

I think that they are the same. I suspect that it's a feature that was added to the firmware a few builds ago.

Does this actually format it "more" than just a secure format on the camera itself?

It depends on how many zero writes you do. I'm not a computer scientist but apparently if you only write it once its still possible to get that data back if you're like a super computer scientist. Unless you shot something super secretive by accident like a mob boss murdering somebody or you shot a sex tape with a super model and then she decided against it.... most people are not going to put that much effort into seeing what is on your card.... So, a secure format in camera is good enough.

Pretty sure a single write is sufficient with solid state media, and since solid state has very finite read/write cycles, it's probably unwise to do multiple pass writes routinely. Multiple writes were intended for spinning media where erase passes might leave readable remnants on either side of the magnetic heads.

I secure format every mag every time. Manual wear-leveling.

The flash controllers used automatically assign "new" and "old" cells to level this out. This is exactly why a secure format exists, to remove any sensitive data that may be left on the disk. What you're doing is destroying your disks.
