How to clean the OLPF sensor

Eclipse and the OLPF

Eclipse and the OLPF

Yes, Eclipse is safe to use along with the correctly sized Sensor Swab. Or you can the Sensor Swab Plus which has the Eclipse already on it. Remember to use enough pressure to cause the handle of the Swab to bend or you leave dirt and streaks. It may take a few Swabs until you get the hang of it Our web site has a chart which helps you determine the correct size for your camera.

When using SS, put one small drop (eclipse) on edge of swab, wipe swab in one direction, the flip swab and wipe the other direction, then toss the swab. Check the sensor, if needed repeat with new swab. May take two or three tries to fully clean, but it works well.

Unless you want the edges of the sensor filled with particles, you'll need to go from one edge to the other. I've been cleaning sensors this way for over ten years (starting with $35,000 digiital capture backs, like Phase One), and this procedure works. At first I was hesitant, but soon learned that I'm not hurting the sensor.

Why is this in the COMPLAINT DEPT? Myabe a mod can move to Bugs/Help section?

And, remember, OLPF and sensor are two different things here. You are cleaning the OLPF only here...

David,

The Red Camera doesn't appear to be listed on your website. Which swab size is appropriate for the Red One?

I'm assuming 2? The Sensor Swab Plus seems like a good option, that way I won't accidentally put to much or too little on.

Thanks!

Jim,

Sorry for the delay in replying. I am on the road and the login details are not (yet) on this computer so I had a bit of guessing to do! Try the type 2. As for the amount of liquid, I do not find it critical and personally use about 5 drops
per cleaning. Some folks swear by 2 , others more. Whatever works. The techniques is more an art - to each his/her own- than a science.

Please feel free to email me directly for questions at dstone@photosol.com for
(usually) faster responses.

David,I strongly disagree, and I hope no one uses your method. The reason for only one drop is that you are not trying to flood the OLPF with fluid, and you need it to dry quickly to reduce streaking and residue. I'm sure if I looked at sensors you have cleaned, I might not see a streak free OLPF. So do yourself a favor, and ease up on the Eclipse.

I've been cleaning digital sensors on high end still backs for the last decade, and this is the suggestion from the manufacturer as well.

Von, how close to the edge of the tip do you drop the eclipse? I'd love to see a little video showing your method. I always end up going through 3-5 brushes and getting very frustrated in the process. (that was on my DSLR)
