  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How to charge RED BRICKs with solar power?

Hi Ryan,
Where are you based? I'm sure there are many a Redusers who would be keen to test out your product and give real world times for recharge and usage. The products sound promising.

Also, you might want to try contacting Red directly to ask them about their upcoming cameras Scarlet and Epic. These cameras shouldn't draw nearly as much power as the Red One in certain configurations, as such it would be worth your while basing a design around these.

Finally perhaps you might consider designing a V-Lock battery charger that connects directly to the solar panels?

Check out Nanosolar, they've got printable thin film solar coming soon.
New website and announcements coming Sept 9, but you can still get to the old site: http://www.nanosolar.com/about.htm
For Red-powering purposes, this is going to change the market in terms of portability and price, and depending what they say on the 9th, it may be close enough to be worth waiting for...

Very good kits!
My cheap home made kit have more power but is also heavier. (Silver/Calcium battery) 180Ah (2160 watt-hours) @ 12V and will run my RED with LCD and drive continuously for 24 hours. The charger is an automatic and recharge one box on 10h. The inverter output max 600W of AC power @ 80% efficiency.

It weigh 15kg/box but it just cost total $400 ;)

Great collection of info here- thanks for all the details. Should make for some easier times when I'm away from the grid!

I just want to vouch for Powerenz...

A few years back they set me up with a portable solar power system that I used for a trek through the Philippines jungle to film a tribe. It kept all my camera batteries, laptop, satellite phone and other accessories charged for several weeks. On previous trips I carried a big generator and would NEVER recommend it to anyone because so many things can go wrong - which did! My solar power system fit in my backpack and could be setup in seconds and of course is completely quite. The panels are water proof as well.

My solar system is several years old so I can't imagine what the new systems can do!

I'm not getting any $$$ from Powerenz, but just wanted to share with you my great experience. Barry is great to work with and will definitely make sure you're satisfied.

So what are you guys doing for travel? Are you guys shipping the batteries to the location, checking them, or buy at the country you are filming at?

I bring as much bricks as I can with me (weight and laws). Then there are always a 12V car batters to be found on every corner of the earth and in most kind of vehicles where they can be recharged. Very good .. unless you are walking :) Ether power the charger or run camera directly with long cable.

Brilliant, thanks for the answer. :)
