  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How the hell to record audio with red raven

I have a Raven and also noticed that I can see the meters on the monitor but you can barley hear the audio. I contacted Red and they wanted sample clips to see if they could see a what the problem was with the camera. I never sent in the footage to red, after talking to other Raven users it seems the audio is barley there. Its is only supposed to be for "scratch audio". It seems strange to me that those mics can't even pick up audio as well as any crap point and shoot camera. Maybe I will stop being lazy and send in a clip to red see if there is a problem.

Even with the gain all the way up?

yeah I am gonna drop 2 ambient shotguns just for event dialog, all my good audio goes to my pix xlrs ect. good to know

I'm thinking of buying a cheap ($142) Denecke Ps-2 device for my Raven. Does anyone have experience with it? It seems like a very solid and small solution for providing a clean signal to your camera and to have the ability to use +48 dual channel. It uses 9V batteries which will last about 4 hours when both channels are used, 8 hours single channel.

Only issue is the fact that it outputs two xlr's instead of one single unbalanced mini jack, but that could be fixed with some creative soldering skills right?

I think this is a very good solution for having good quality sound straight from the camera. Looks like a great solution for small crews, one man bands, and documentary/run and gun style shooting.

What are your thoughts?

That cable looks like it will work!

I just found this thread on another forum: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?276092-Denecke-PS2-Modification
I'm not sure how he did it and I'm not really confident that it will work out if I try it myself though. He also mentioned a few posts later, that the Denecke creates a voltage spike at the moment the 9V battery is placed, that can damage the circuit; something to look out for.

The Behringer unit seems fine too, it looks a little bulky though and it only has one input. So it's cheaper, but the Denecke seems to be the better choice in my opinion.

The only issue with rewiring the PS-2 for minijack is if you have a situation where you have two inputs, one requiring +48v and one not - like a boom mic and a wireless lav. if you keep the XLR output on the PS-2 and use the adapter I linked, then you can bypass the PS-2 with the wireless lav and connect its XLR to the XLR on the adapter cable and still get your stereo pair, while only one goes input goes through the PS-2 for +48v.

My opinion is this, the Video MicPro which is self powered is the best mic for on board camera. Its small, doesn't need Phantom, and sounds pretty good. Anything beyond that, you'll need a proper sound guy anyway.

The scratch mic work fine for me - just keep in mind they do not magically record distant sounds at the same level as right next to the camera! Would be nice to see a plot of their sensitivity by distance and off axis position. I am finding they are mostly usable for slating.

I've heard the internal mics are quiet for scratch audio (not a problem) but what about the audio recorded in camera from wireless receivers through the V-lock I/O expander? We use a lot of Sennheiser wireless transmitters/receivers for shooting interviews...

I've used G2s, G3s, and AVXs through that mini jack and it comes through crystal clear. Just make sure you're using high quality cables.

How do I it get on board of the Raven?

Thanks in advance from a one-man-band.

The mic already compatible. Just plug it in to the audio input of your expander, then go to audio settings and select external mics for channels 1/2 (or 3/4 if you prefer).

Thank for a quick answer.

Yes, of course ...

But I meant something like an accessory shoe or whatever it is called. Haven´t found anything on website Red or Wooden Camera. Don´t want to buy a cage or the like. Will the lcd monitor on the top be a problem when I attach something like that?

Great to hear. Thank you!
