I'm doing a very simple effects shot using a matte with an opacity gradient. Did a little test, looks great. But I was thinking if I could add a little pan it would really sell it.

If I were to frame the shot a little wider, how would be the best way to crop in a little bit and add a small pan. I'm using Red's apps and FCP.

THANKS! :)

Is it wide or tight? what lens? Mapping a little distortion on to the image will help sell the pan instead of a slide.

Do you have Motion (FCS) or just FCP? If Motion, I'd do it in there. If you have a Lynda.com account, you can find a quick tutorial on that specific subject. If not, I'd get one. It's cheap. Lynda.com might also have a tutorial explaining how to do that in FCP but I typically use motion.

Hey Mike :) I do have FCS, though I've never opened Motion. Would it be a fairly easy task?

Like Mike said, Motion is the way to do it. Yes, it's pretty simple.

cool. I think I'll shoot it both ways. normal and also wider and then I can play from there.

You can do it inside FCP Motion or other compositing applications are not needed for this kind of editing. Shoot wider because you'll need to scale it up! than use the keyframes to move the clip.

What's your final output Brandon? you can work with stuff in 4k with After effects and pan and zoom from the 4k image. You can't do that in final cut because you can' import 4k material. Unless your final output is less than 2k or 1080, that would be your best bet. Anyone disagree with that?
