  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How much needed for Stage 3 from RED UK?

RED Europe is part of RED Digital Cinema - we just want to do the best we can for you guys and provide the line of least resistance..

Customs is a nightmare in Germany too! Did you ever hear of a "Veredelungsbescheinigung" if you needed to send anything overseas for repair? OMG – watch out for Prussions …

This is not a complaint but there is something I don't understand.

When we imported our Red One to the UK, the camera was imported, according to Red's classification as a "Video Digital Still Camera" for which the Customs commodity code was 8525.80.5050 and was rated at 0% ( Which I don't think exists anymore). On the EU taric code website, the nearest code I can find is 8525 80 40 for which the duty is 0%. I understand that other items are shipped with the Epic, however I was told by customs that any items included with the camera that were integral to its running would be classified the same as the camera (i.e 0%)

What I don't understand is where the 5% import duty comes into play with the Epic. When the Red One was shipped last time there was a lot of confusion about commodity codes, and some people were charged high rates, but we were not. Is it possible to clarify on what basis/code the 5% import duty into the EU is based on please?

Again this is not a complaint I just want to understand the technicalities.

So that means for a red customer in Europe (Germany) its the best to fly to the US to get the camera in person right? that way we don't have to pay taxes again right?

Guys, please trust us on this. We have specialist people in the employ of RED Digital and we have spent many hours with customs officials establishing the correct tariff code for all of our products.
The most valuable product of course is the camera Brain - this does come under the initial heading 8525 80...but beyond that there are several options which vary from 0% to 14%.
Those options are, in some cases such as ours, dependent upon a combination of sensor size, resolution and frame rate capabilities.
EPIC, Scarlet and RED One are DSMC, not DSLR cameras, and the amount of images that the camera is able to capture is fundamental to its categorisation.
Remember this, once you make a purchase from a bona fide seller, any recourse concerning import duties is down to them.
When you make a personal import, you remain responsible for the declaration, and customs retain the right to revisit that in the future should they so wish.
As I said earlier, we are trying to make this easy for you.

Alan.

Only if you choose not to declare the camera when you bring it into Germany - AKA 'smuggling'.

Another question to Alan.
Do you send out an email when you received an Red One for Evaluation?
We send in our R1 last wednesday, according to Fedex someone with the name Kim signed at RED UK...

Hi Alan... it's not a distrust, I just want to understand why HMRC have told me one thing in the past and now it seems the classification has shifted. I had understood from Red in the US that the Red One was a "Video Digital Still Camera" . All the variants of the Taric code 8525 80 do indeed show a duty of 4.9%, however using the Red One as the yardstick, I still can't see why the classification of the Epic is not 8525.80.30 - a digital camera. I appreciate whatever C&E says goes, but as per my previous post, my import of the Red One was zero rated and verified by HMRC so I don't see why the Epic is any different. There was a lot of confusion at the time when you had to import from the US re taric codes and there were those that paid high import duties which we did not.

Like I said, not a distrust, it's just I don't get it.

The camera is with us Norbert, and our tech manager Chris will contact you when it is in process.
We expect to get the camera into to eval within 5 days of it arriving with us.

Fact remains that an individual import can be open to interpretation.
A different HMRC officer can elect to choose a different rate at the point of entry if he chooses.
We have elected to press for an agreed tariff which we now use at every import, and we are confident that this rate is correct and will withstand challenge.
The zero rate code does not stand close examination - all RED cameras will fall outside of the given parameters of that code.

Custom officers are able to learn too, believe it or not. So, those who got their R1 classified as "video digital still camera" were just lucky at the time. BTW, the largest CF card at the time was 8 GB, and the recording time was under the limit for European import as a moving image camera. Meanwhile they understood that Epic and Scarlet are incredible moving image cameras and the authorities want their share…
