  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How many have postponed delivery of their camera?

Is there any indication of how many people have postponed delivery of their camera? Based on the threads they're working on S/N 750-1000. How many have actually been shipped?

Cheers

That's probably confidential information so I wouldn't be surprised if they kept that to themselves. Rightfully so.

Now, I only hope the next 400 will postpone their EVF's so I can get one next week....

In the beginning it was like a miracle machine in short supply.
Many people ordered the camera with the intention of flipping it for a quick profit.
Others dreamed of renting it for huge profits.
Both these groups found out that there is no market for resale or renting.
So they are either canceling the order or postponing delivery.
That is my speculation.

Waiting for post solutions here for now.

I was a critic of Red for years, but after looking at the footage I have come more and more to be a fan of the camera. Not a miracle machine, but the Red is mostly what they said it would be. People who have bought the camera seem to be happy and there are national spots already on the air that were shot with the camera.

Have you heard something about the camera that I haven't? Just curious.

I am sure there are people concerned about workflow after acquisition. Apple and Scratch may be great but quite a few people are waiting for PC workflow. Don't know how many postponed but an indicator might be how fast numbers are coming up compared to the delivery rate of 700 a month.

For myself, I would like to checkout Scarlet which is only couple of months away. I was told by Red team that a deposit on Red One is not transferable to Scarlet. As more and more bugs are fixed I anticipate deliveries to accelerate and may not have to wait that long for my camera. I need a PC workflow, not Apple, not Scratch. For a combination of these reasons I haven't ordered my camera yet. Just sitting on the fence for now.

" Ownership transfer policy " is what I like to know from RED.com

seems to me that the persons that have a RED in their hands are NOT having a problem selling them if they choose to sell .... it's the persons that don't have a camera in hand that are having a difficult time flipping them -and some are doing it ...

anybody that was "in" the business when they ordered a Red and have taken delivery seem to be very happy with rentals ...
those that have never worked in the business or no ties to the industry might find it hard to rent/shoot but that has nothing to do with RED - wouldn't matter what camera they bought ....

perhaps few have found it difficult to come up with the 22-28k ? and are still saving $$$ ....
few could be waiting for the camera to be fully enabled ?
and few for more solid PC post ?

I'd settle for a solid apple post.

I have'nt had any work flow issues yet.

I'm Just droppin in the 2k Qt's, cutting in real time, the second the clip opens in the time line. I grade in real time, output to SR tape in 10bit.

done.

It just couldn't be any easier.

I'm digging the fact that I can shoot and ingest into my FCP timeline quicker than I can digitizing video tape. But looking at images that match or better almost every film job I have ever shot.

Go RED go.

That's fine and understood, if you are willing to use Apple. I for one am not. I stopped all production 3 years ago because I could not get the quality image I wanted, and knew about the developing cmos sensor technology. I did not have the funds to develop it but hoped someone else would. Shortly after I heard about Red, I signed up. Needless to say, I am very anxious to get started on my several waiting projects, but, I delayed shipment of my first cam because of the workflow issues. (I have gotten and processed quite a bit of red footage.) I also delayed because I needed a lens at about 85mm.
I have gone ahead and paid for mine now, even though it will have to sit unused for a while. Hopefully, by the time the second cam is ready for delivery everything will be ready to go.

I have great confidence that the guys at Red WILL fix the PC workflow problem and have put my money in to prove it. (The reason the camera will be unused for a while is also that I will be waiting for the Nikon adapter.) I also tried out the cineform approach, and it helps, but each of my sessions yields about 2 hours of footage to process, and at 3 or 4 seconds per frame...
There are 24 sessions for the main project, think of how long that would take.
Another workflow problem for the PC, is that there is no good way to get the sound yet, which is probably more important than the image for my stuff. Quick Time files are not usuable on the PC, (8 bit only) so you would have to do a separate pass to get the sound. (Unless you use cineform? Didn't have any footage with sound to test that and haven't seen it mentioned anywhere here yet.)

I dream of the day when we can start editing immediately, but it's not here yet. (I expect we will have something after NAB. Just a guess, I have no inside info.)

This does not answer the original question as to how many, but I can tell you of this one anyway.

Big T, Do you mind listing out your hardware? What do you grade in? Thanks in advance!

I've also been wondering how many reserved/ordered REDs have been fully paid for and shipped, and how many postponed or canceled.

If the engraved camera serial numbers are truly sequentially numbered, you'd think that people would start receiving cameras with serial numbers that were lower than their initial reservation numbers. Has this been the case?

Then the difference in the numbers would indicate how many reservations were on hold or canceled.

I suppose that the serial numbers could be custom-engraved after payment is received, with the canceled reservation numbers skipped, but that seems like it would be a lot of trouble to go through.

Welcome to red user Derth. Cameras that are canceled go into the service pool. None of the above is true. Can you imagine keeping up with that type of sliding system?

Andrew

If people are paying with finds no denominated in USD then all they a have to do is hold off for about 5 months and the RED camera will cost them about 100 Euros.

Hold on, the QTs are giving you better-than-film results? Honestly? I tried the QTs, but the debayer is weird, aand the output is about a quarter the quality of a REDCINE DPX. Have I missed something? Did the QTs suddenly get better? Time for me to do some more testing...

Hi,

The original 100 cameras went to the service pool so I doubt they need many more. Red changed their stance on people who would not take delivery within 30 days, I take that to mean there were more than a handful of reservation not wishing to take delivery at this time.

"If the engraved camera serial numbers are truly sequentially numbered, you'd think that people would start receiving cameras with serial numbers that were lower than their initial reservation numbers. Has this been the case?"

the serial number is a sticker on bottom of the camera - so any sticker ( number can be put on any camera ... any sticker can be removed .. it seems that the real tracking # is the serial (or pin) number embeded in the firmware ( or would that be like the bios? ) ? - any if you look at your rear LCD you'll see a number and i think that can't be erased and if your camera was stolen it could still be tracked down using that number ...

i beleive camera's are shipped by # & by when they are PAID in full ..
so if camera 999 is paid in full when they recieve their "camera ready to ship" email vs. camera 752 camera is not paid and they get the same email and doesn't pay for anotehr 2 weeks = then 999 camera will be shipped before 750 ...
so it all comes down to the shipping day - lower number is 1st BUT it must be paid , not paid onto the next number ... so if you want your camera in the 1st few days of the "group number" (ie: 750-1000) you are in - pay in full before you receive your email or pay ASAP as you get the email ...
those in the next group 1001 - ? ...i believe you can pay anytime .. i wouldn't call or email them to ask how much do you owe - just add up what you ordered, send them that amount plus guess on tax , figure 500 shipping and then on another 500 for just in case ... you can always get a refund or use balance on future puchases ...
