I have two reels, one general cinematography reel for music videos, commercials etc. and one with all my fashion/ glamour/ swimwear/ lingerie stuff thats oriented at the fashion industry. too many skin tones in there for the regular commercial world ^^

Currently, I only have a narrative reel, because that's where my focus is at. But in the next year or so, I'll be cutting together a music video reel as well, and expanding in that direction.

I think it's really important to have a strong reel that corresponds with the the type of gig that you are interviewing for. A commercial producer is looking for different things than a narrative producer, or a music video producer. Even though my narrative reel shows I can light actors and create frames that tell a story, it doesn't guarantee a commercial producer that I know how to light a product, or a music video producer that I know how to make their pop star look glamorous. At the end of the day, all they want from their DP hire, is someone who knows how to do their job, so that the producer has one less major thing to worry about. And the easiest way to prove you know how to do your job, is by showing a strong reel that has multiple projects in that exact field.

I think a reel for commercials, a reel for industrials/documentaries, and a reel for scripted film/TV makes sense. Music video people sometimes have a reel of just highlights from different videos, but they do date pretty quickly.

The truth is producers want to see their project type on your reel and anything off-topic can distract. It's a good idea to have a general reel to showcase capability, but also have specific reels for your specific segment. In my case, I have a general reel, auto, high speed, commercial/live action/beauty and narrative. Someone just asked me for a green screen reel the other day. I have the material, but have to go back and cut that at some point as well.
