What's the lightest you've gotten your RED ONE for handheld operation? Just curious.

That's with CF Cards, Small Nikon lens, LCD, and carbon fiber rods. I then put the battery on belt and use a House of Power shoulder pad strapped directly to me. Can't remember if that weight was for 1 or 2 handles. Also, I'll have to weigh it again with the SSD and see how much that adds to the equation. But R1s can be configured to be light. It's when you thrown on PL glass, EVF, TC gadgetry, etc that the rigs get massive.

RED One with with 17-50 RPZ or 16-42 Optimo, a light-weight mattebox like the RED or Arri LMB-5, ET BOB, Side SSD module RED 5.6" LCD, and Mantis shoulder rig checks in 20lbs or slightly under, with SSD card installed and a filter or two in the MB. Battery not included - run that to the belt clip.

That or similar configurations are no heavier than many 2/3" broadcast cameras on the shoulder, or at least not by much. And those lenses are small and relatively light for PL glass. You add another 3lbs just by changing the lens from one of those lightweight zooms to a 25mm RPP, for example. The new /i Panchros or Zeiss CP's are decent size/weight for primes.

I use the ET 19mm ARRI base (old non-hybrid style) to mount the RED One to the Mantis. If I mount rods, I use carbon fiber.

dropping the Mantis and the ARRI base, you can lose a couple pounds. I used to go that way quite a bit. I like the uGrip handle system or the O'Connor O-Grips. And then wear a shoulder pad for the camera to rest on. A rig like the Mantis is nice. While it's heavier, it holds the camera better than simply resting it on a shoulder pad. My only real complaint with the Mantis is the lack of lateral adjustment for the grip handles and that it makes the camera sit up a bit high. Height-wise isn't so bad for me as I'm on the short side, but it can mess with the center of gravity somewhat if you start loading up the rig with too much crap or larger/heavier lenses.

Just got the Zacuto EVF...I will test it out this weekend to see if I could replace the original RED EVF for handheld operation...that thing is HEAVY!

Lightest i could get it

Lightest i could get it

Here's a set up I use all the time... I made a bracket for the screen and use the battery belt clip. I made a nylon strap as a handle. I also mount a shotgun mic on the side from time to time...

I am digging that handle...I wonder if one could grab it as you are if the RED gets to got. What is the grey plate under the camera...looks like a drive of sorts

Hey Daniel...things going well...enjoying the lens?
It sure looks like a dovetail...a short one

Awesome! I love DIY setups... if it does the trick, why not?

Owen, I can't imagine a way to get any lighter than that (short of ditching the lens entirely in favor of a piece of foil with a pinhole).

The dovetail looks like the plate from an old Bogen/Manfrotto 3066 head.

I can confirm that it is from a 3066 head indeed as I have one in mint condition :)

God I'm so glad I never have to put the Red One on my shoulder again. Don't get me wrong as Epic/ Scarlet is no feather, but it is a HUGE step in the right direction!

I know it doesn't look that small...but I think it is around 17lb.

Consists of:

320GB RED Drive attached to rails with super heavy duty industrial rubber bands...solid and it doesn't even move a "mm"
Element Technica Ultra Light 15 with 15mm rods
Zacuto Handles
Zacuto EVF replacing the monstrous (yet quite awesome) Original RED EVF
Duclos Cinemized Nikon Primes.
Chorsziel Follow Focus

It weight no more than a typical ENG Broadcast cam...I love it.

The only thing that bothers me is that the RED ONE looks tiny when I am holding it...I might need to slim down.

Coco, I HIGHLY suggest going SSD. That will even get the weight down further and help you with balancing the camera even better. I have a similar setup to yours.

- Nikon Lenses (cine mod) and Optitek ProLok mount
- Element Technica baseplate and rods (19mm but thinking about going 15 to lighten it up even more)
- Red 5.6" original LCD (I use DP4 when I need EVF, very lightweight)
- Red handles ( i usually manage to get them tight enough so they don't slip during handheld)
- House of Power shoulder pad strapped to my shoulder
- Red battery beltpack
- RR Follow focus
- Obox unless I want really lightweight and then I go with screw-in filters

I need to check on the exact weight of the setup when I get a chance.

.

Thanks for the tip on the shoulder pad...been looking for one desperately...the RED ONE on my shoulders is ok on the first hour...but by the 2nd hour...it hurts like a momma!

I'm glad you mentioned the SSD...is it solid? no hick ups? More forgiving than the RED DRIVE when moving? I know with the drive I can't do sudden movements or I'm up a creek. Did you install the module yourself or does one need to send it to RED to have it installed and tested?

Finally...is 320GB on the hard drive the same as 320GB on the SSD drives? i figure a gig is a gig is a gig...unless it writes differently...taking up more space.

So far, rock solid. They have been selling for good prices recently here on Reduser. Just find a trusted seller and you should be able to get a lightly used one for about $1000. It's a relatively easy user install.

Largest RED SSD is 256GB right now. It's not cheap. best price I have seen here on reduser is $2600. New is $3200. Better price per GB than CF cards, but the Red Drive has been the best price per GB so far but of course there are some issues using spinning drives in certain shooting situations. By the way, the Element Technica shock mounts for the drive solved many of those issues. Only extreme situations would get me in trouble. But i could go handheld with those shockmounts and usually not have to worry. But SSD is where it's at if cost isn't an issue. Solid state and they work on all three RED camera models.

So is 256GB the only way to go? Any reason not to go with the 4 Pack 64GB or 128GB? Is it just price or is it there convenience of smaller times when offloading?
