  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is it powered from the same cable that sends the video signal?

Does it have a video out to also send video wireless?
If so, Which video outs does it have?

And since im asking so many questions, what is the meaning of life?

Yes it is.

Yes - but it is HD-SDI and / or HDMI at 720p HD.

cool.. i was thinking of getting a cheap lcd with component in from a convertion box hdmi>component.. but wouldnt be saving that much with all the extra weight, batteries cables box etc, might as well get the red LCD :D

Thanks for the meaning of life link Tlorenzo :D hehe.. ive lived in Denmark from 1988-1989, was a cool country, my school was close to Tivoli, was lots of fun, danish hotdogs, arcade games, great night life, loved it!

Yeah. You don't want to do that. Just get the Red LCD. You've never seen anything SO cool! I've used both Marshall and Astro monitors for the past several years to monitor my HD signals on set. I shot my first commercial on the Red One yesterday. Our set up was with only the Red LCD and a standard HDMI computer monitor for video village. I have never seen a more incredible on-camera LCD, both in terms of weight and resolution. At only 4 inches, you can't see more resolution than this monitor provides, so having a better resolution monitor is ridiculous. It's truly a magic trick how they've packed all that resolution and functionality into such a tiny, lightweight (only a few ounces) package. The Red Monitor Arm (similar to - if not identical to - a Noga Israelli Arm) bears ZERO strain to hold the monitor, which makes lighting fast positioning adjustments possible (try that with a Marshall and a brick battery).

One last BEAUTIFUL thing about this monitor is that I never once found myself wishing for the electronic view finder. I'm sure the EVF will be great to have, however it is certainly NOT necessary.

The Red LCD, just like the Red One Camera, is more bang for your buck than ANY other manufacturer currently offers

Interested to hear from people using the EVF vs the LCD. Advantages etc.

My wallet would love to believe Clark when he says the EVF is not necessary, but it certainly seemed to be a big deal for a lot of folk.

Stuart,

so do you feed a HD-SDI signal or an HDMI signal into the RED LCD?
I'd expected you feed something more generic like an LVDS signal to it.
I've bet if one is out there who knew what signal is carried it must be you. You even know the meaning of life, so tell me please which real signal you feed in there?

Just in case someone came to the idea of feeding an "HD-SDI and / or HDMI at 720p HD" into some of the pins of the LCD. But if it would be possible to do so, I'd be interested to know about it!

The RED LCD itself is a DVI display.

Hi Cailyoung,

may I ask where you derive that information from?
I'd be happy if it really were a DVI display, ie. it must have a DVI compatible signal processing inside. So it'll be physically possible to make a DVI to LEMO connector and fit that exact monitor to other DVI sources, or to HDMI as well.

I just wonder, because it feels technically like a potential waste of time to first convert the internal signals to the DVI standart and then decode it again inside the monitor to typical LVDS for driving the display. Embedded engineering would usually use a more direct approach. But maybe RED really used DVI to have a more common connection for the LCD and EVF.

If its really DVI, I'd like to learn the pin mapping, so we can create an adapter cable and power source.

Hi Cailyoung,

may I ask where you derive that information from?

In the ops manual:

RED-LCD: 1024 x 600 resolution RGB 4:4:4 progressive video display with Surround View,
frame guides and safe action / title overlays, zebra and false color exposure overlays, wave-
forms, camera status and operation menus.

1024x600 is not an HDSDI or HDMI compatible resolution.

Cailyoung,

I assume thats a pretty misleading assumption, just because its not native HD-SDI or HMDI, it must be DVI...

I assume its a proprietary signal port, potentially very close to native interface ports of LCD displays. And these are NOT DVI, but often (or mostly) LVDS. Almost every LCD display you can buy has an internal interface board that converts external video ports like HDMI, DVI, VGA, YUV, RGB, YC, Composite etc. to the true LCD panels interface port, which as to my knowledge is often LVDS. So many displays of same size share the exact same LCD panel, but have different interface boards, making the real difference.

Mmmh, so to me it sounds pretty much that we can NOT connect the RED LCD to an DVI output using a simple DVI to LEMO cable. Too bad.

Maybe Stuart or someone else from RED can shed some light here :)

I'm also basing the assumption on my vague memory of a RED employee saying it's a DVI-over-LEMO situation. No idea who, though.

Cailyoung,

so I suggest having a meditative session and trying to remember. Then I can wire the cable and we are done.

If the "who" from RED is reading this, well, and if you are allowed to, then, of course, we'd be interested in a wiring info.

It would be fun to add that monitor to my notebook in set-after-hours as editing compagnion... :)

I imagine lots of different uses for that monitor if it were a pure DVI device (surely needing a seperate power supply then).

i would say the LCD is fine for interiors
BUT for exteriors and hand held = EVF!
IMO day/night difference between using EVF & LCD hand held & exteriors

Copenhagen has changed a lot since then (for the better) - please come back when you can and I'll buy you a beer (or coke if you prefer) :)
