  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How is Alexa made.

At some point very soon, Arri has to go all-in on digital. The decision to make Alexa resolution limited isn't helping them, it puts them behind the curve. Its just interesting to watch.

I know that's a popular sentiment around here, but the fact is that they're selling every Alexa they can build and at this point basically cannot keep up with the demand, a situation not dissimilar to Red's situation at the same point in it's development, a few months after it's initial ship date. That doesn't sound particularly precarious to me. For whatever reasons, they chose different areas to concentrate on than Red did. That's not good, bad, or otherwise, and I for one feel that the industry as a whole always benefits when different products are developed and released that represent different views and have different strengths (and weaknesses). In terms of choices for cinematographers and yes, for producers, I think that's a great thing and, it also serves the different needs of different ends of the industry.

For the record, I don't think Arri is in a precarious situation, they have many people protecting their interests.

I just think they decided that they already make 4K cameras and Arri digital cameras should complement their product line, not compete with it or replace it. That's a valid management call on their part.

Next thing you know people are going to start comparing zip vs LZW compression qualities. "There's just a more organic texture to footage that uses ZIP over LZW. I would say that jokingly but I know it's only a matter of time.

...but that whole ZIP vs. LZW/LZH battle already played itself out in 1990.

If they want to liquidize film camera inventory, I'd be happy to buy an ARRIFLEX 416 Plus at a rock bottom price.
