I'm looking to replace my light but weak netbook for travel downloads.
Is the Microsoft Surface pro 2 able to copy ( with a USB3 hub ) Redmags to a USB3 drive with a decent speed ?
How about running RCX , is it ok for looking at shots here and there ?
Thanks.

i use surfacepro (the first one) and even with it i can previev files in RCX nicely. However i couln't find a good solution for the usb3 hub. So my suggestion is to get an ultrabook with similer specs and with at least two usb3 ports. it would save a lot of cable and hub and power (for the hub)

You mean the usb3 hubs just don't work at all ? or ?

each of these only has one usb port, so you would need to run a hub/splitter to get input and output. and don't forget if you plan to use usb to power the redmag reader as well...

It can playback 1/8th res off an SSD at 24fps. The USB hub is a real downer though, I won't lie. Especially since it needs to be a *powered* USB hub in order for both a HDD and an SSD to dangle off a the same time. Speeds though are full USB3 speeds so limited to your HDD mostly. (300MB/s / 2 for the hub).

What I like about the Surface Pro 2 is kind of in spite of its less than phenomenal offloading capabilities and that is that I can just plug a USB3 REDMag reader and check footage without going back to a big a laptop/dedicated offload station. It's like plugging a redmag into an ipad right there on set.

Gavin,
I like the form factor of the surface pro.
Could I get 50 megabytes / sec transfer from a redmag to a usb3 pocket drive ? That would be enough for me. I use the WD passport drives which are small and 2 TB each.

That depends on the drive. I'm not sure what the write speeds are on WD passports but it's certainly theoretically possible. I haven't noticed any slowdowns on the Surface USB chipset. So it'll give you 300MB/s per port. If the drives can keep up the Surface will for sure. I have a portable SSD I use and it copies data to it at the drive's max 120MB/s rate from the local hdd.

Another possible option is the Sony Duo laptops (http://store.sony.ca/vaio-duo-13/cat-31-catid-Computers-Convertible-Duo-Series). It's essentially a Win8 tablet but you can load it up with an i7 CPU. Two USB 3 ports, HDMI, SC card reader, every flavor of wifi and bluetooth. The keyboard lives under the screen. When you lift the top of the screen the keyboard is revealed, otherwise you hold and use it like a tablet.

I've got one and it's been flawless.

Powering the hub and its lack of speed makes me carry my 2 year old heavy laptop. So i would not suggest a tablet without two usb 3 ports.

The one Paul suggested seems to be perfect fit. Since its faster and have longer battery life with two usb3 ports.
