  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How easy will it be to upgrade Epic/Scarlet MX to Monstro ?

it would also make a lot of sense to keep 2 brains around, your s35 and when you get a FF brain. A lot of main stream lenses, from Arri to Panavision, to RPP and so on, don't cover FF, and you leave yourself open to more clientele giving more options like that....

Why 2 brains..? Wouldn't the FF35 brain contain the s35 ratio as well.
Similarly if you had FF35 lenses you could shoot either FF35 or
mask down to a s35 ratio.

Still wondering why Zeiss is only one so far out with FF35 lens set.

It will really come down to pixel size in each. If they have the same pixel size and pitch, absolutely!

Ok I know Monstro is down the line but it has been the standard I have been looking for since the Epic/Scarlet was announced, full frame, electronic lenses etc.
I am looking at getting the Epic/Scarlet MX when released as I reckon the Monstro wont be here until 2012 (just a guess) and was just wondering as Epic/Scarlet is modular will the new Monstro sensor sit into the existing brain or will a new brain be required. Sorry if this has been asked but I couldn't find the answer.

Regards

Camera "brains" are a clever name for camera "bodies"

You have to buy a whole new brain which will cost between $7k-30k depending on if you're going Epic or Scarlet

The big difference between MX and Monstro will be dynamic range

I actually don't look at them that way. To me, a camera body would contain everything you'd need except media and lenses. These need more. They require a separate module for recording medium, something to attach power too, and then lens and other modules like IO, redmote, etc. I think that is an important distinction. If you buy a new Brain, you can still use the same red handle, LCD, EVF, battery module, CF module, IO module, etc. That's not something I am going to get with other camera bodies.

Brain, body, it's all semantics. The brains are very expensive when compared to the rest of the components, as they should be.. When I signed onto to Red, what turned me on the most was the ability to upgrade out the guts of the RedOne for a newer and better camera down the line. We can still do that as we're seeing now with the MX. The Epic/Scarlet still somewhat follow that model by allowing the use of different accessories with all their parts, however, I see the sensor block, the BRAIN, as being the heart of the camera and consequently the most expensive part to replace/add on. Buying a brain is akin to buying a whole new camera IMHO. I'm talking straight dollas and cents here. $30k for a full frame Monstro brain is still $30k.

Haha, well true, there is a lot of semantics. I can say though I am THRILLED to be able to get the Fixed 2/3 and the S35 and share all the same parts. I actually have purpose for both brains.

But yeah, $30k is $30k :)
