  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How does your REDmote perform?

Basically foolcontrol makes this 3year remote outmoded & a dead end.

Touch control thru I phone, pad, computer is instant , totall control over all elements of camera operations , instant on set look creations, meta data slating , instant & easy playback of takes , precise focus racking of lenses . ...all from your own phone which = one less bit of kit you have to update, battery charge and worry about if it is going to work or not & all for less $$$ .

IMO, Redmote = deadmote.

my redmote has been a nightmare from day one... Not that it does not work. It works "most of the time"... Problem is that being in the wildlife field, missed shots are not to be shot again all too often. My redmote is unreliable, likely too freeze any moment, preventing recording, needing reboot, resulting in waste of time, missed shots. Causes of failure unkwown, but one : if I am crazy enough as to undock my redmote and operate it before, say, ten seconds after boot, then it will inevitably freeze. I sure could live with that, but not with unpredictable failures. I feel two opposite things about red on that specific issue. First is gratitude for the outstanding service quality : I sent my redmote back. Nothing was found, has often in similar cases... but I had my wi-fi card changed for free. I did NOT return my camera body. Second is irritation, how was such a faulty, relatively "simple" piece of "professional" gear ever released, when red was able to make the Epic ? I cannot understand... I have been advised to change build. I have, with no improvement to my redmote. I have been suggested to return both camera and redmote, but I cannot consider sending back my whole gear just because of a faulty redmote. Besides, I guess my redmote will perform flawlessly when tested again, because I cannot think of anyone trying and trying again in real field conditions until a failure occurs.

Just to add to the noise, and to get the count towards good going:

Mine worked fine during the last 3 years. No problems whatsoever.

I have 2 they work good (depending on the day of the week) they have their own character ;-) But after a reboot or 2 they come back.

Used it exclusively for a year straight, until we got our touch screen. 50% success. It either connects in a normal time frame, or just searches forever. We end up having to mount it to get it to connect then un mount it and retry. The super irritating thing is there are RED employees out there who have used the antenna from the body in some way to put in the redmote, and it's INSANE. I've seen one in action and said hey i want! And they said, sorry custom job from inside red. MEH, honestly, there are way better ways now to control the camera, spring for the wireless connection box and control with your phone.

Anyone remember the whole enter button getting stuck. Then RED did the repairs for free. Early days, happened to me first week owning it, but was a quick fix and RED admitted it was their fault. I remember years ago when I got mine, the range it had. I remember being on location at a factory controlling my camera from inside the bathroom (I washed my hands). And camera was on steady outside and was working great. When I walked back to camera the AC and steady op was telling me, there must be a glitch in the camera build cause it was doing things on its own. They were surprised that I had control from 300 ft and through 2 walls. Those were the days. Now, I get 20 feet and it's gone. Which is fine cause AC's don't wanna use it anyways. So it sits in my body case till the few times, I'm just sitting by monitor not oping while dping, and want to still control camera.

I tried another used REDmote and got similar unreliable results.
Fortunately, the seller was cool enough to agree to let me test it upon receiving it and ship it back to him the same day if it didn't work well.

Edit:
I've been researching the HOTLINK and I'm leaning towards that now...

welp, I've had a redmote for about 3 years now, used on 3 different cameras(soon to be 4) and it just works.

Have you folks been updating the redmote firmware?

I rarely put the redmote on camera(except to sync).
I charge it via USB when its low on juice.

2 different cameras - yes I update firmware to the latest always - never put it on the camera (except to sync) - charge via usb - it never works...

I ended up getting a 5" TOUCH LCD and never looking back.

Yeah. I have one as well, and a side handle... But I need the REDMote to start the camera without touching it - I do a lot of shots where even the slightest touch to the camera to press record could / can / will cause problems.

Just because there are other options, doesn't mean that this one shouldn't work as expected.

dang, have you tried sending back to Red for service?

Also, by firmware i meant the firmware on the redmote itself.

I'm aware that some camera firmware and redmote firmware don't jive w/ eachother

I've spoken ad nauseum with my rep.

Yeah I know what you mean - still unreliable.

If mine starts tethered, it's usable. If it starts untethered, it will not connect, regardless of distance. That alone has prevented me from getting any use out of it, as I have a v-mount covering the tether point.

It's been to Red twice, replaced completely once.
